Boeing 787-9 (789): Discussion of 787-9 AA as of 6 Oct 2016

22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were ordered in total by American Airlines.

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Coach, MCE & Premium Economy Seat, Service (master thd)

Retaining the wingspan of the 787-8, the 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 20 feet (6.1 m) longer fuselage and a 54,500 pounds (24,700 kg) higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW), seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range. Link to Wikipedia article.
Seating in the 787-9 "out of the box" will comprise
  1. 30 Business class seats

  2. 21 Premium Economy seats

  3. 234 economy seats (207 Main Cabin, 27 Main Cabin Extra)
...we learned that American would be installing the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat on their (~half the 772 fleet) 777-200, A350, and 787 aircraft going forward. These are the same types of business class seats as on Air Canada, China Airlines, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, etc. (EXCEPT the AA seats will not offer privacy dividers for the Center pair of seats) Link to One Mile at a Time article
B/E Aerospace will provide the Premium Economy seating (possibly a version of their Millennium seat); extendable leg and footrests for bulkhead seats, foot pegs for the rest.

AA will receive an additional 10 787-9s in 2017 and will receive the final 8 in 2018. AA has ordered a total of 22 787-9s to complement its 20 787-8s. These will have the General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Its actually going to be a while before these aircraft really start to show up en masse as AA is taking its final three 787-8s in February and March. It won't be until next summer where they'll be plenty of these aircraft flying around the system.

I think you may be better informed than I; I agree the 787-9 is made for somewhat thinner longhaul routes.

Last week there were 787s ready for delivery to Air Canada, Hainan, Thai, and one unpainted.

Views from the air are awesome as well.
I wonder if they offer tours, like Boeing Everett?

Since they are opening/have opened a 787 base at LAX, its pretty safe to assume a great deal of LAX-Pacific flying will be operated on the 787-9. I don't believe for a second that the 787-8s were intended for primarily Trans-Pacific operations but rather as a stop gap before the 787-9/A350-900 arrived in large numbers. I should point out that AA's rapidly growing operations in the Pacific have seen pretty strong load factors, in large part due to utilising the Dreamliner on many of the newer routes like DFW-PEK/PVG.

Sadly, no. I looked into this as soon as I started making the drives to CHS, as I would LOVE to do a tour, and my son would enjoy it as well.

As per Boeing's website, only the Everett and St. Louis facilities offer tours.

First @AmericanAir 787-9 will be based at @DFWAirport. Domestic proving/training flights at first, then to Sao Paulo and Madrid.

The Madrid route from early Nov to early May from DFW had all the first class availability on the currently scheduled 777 removed from purchasing inventory, so hoping to be on the 787-900 for my Jan trip.

Interesting! Great to see they'll be flying these planes commercially pretty quickly. Pretty big switch from a premium heavy 77W on DFW-GRU to a high density 787-9. I bet those margins to Brazil are uglier than we think. Question is where does that pair of 77Ws end up? DFW-HND if approved? I think once the 777 CIP is complete next year, DFW-MAD will revert to a 289 seat 772. The 787-9 makes a major difference in margins on flights longer than twelve hours.

Any idea if AA will use the same cramped seats in Y/MCE on the 789 as in the 788?

I know BA had received so many complaints about their 788 that they changed the seats in their 789. Hopefully AA does the same.

My DFW-GRU in early Nov has also had all the F inventory pulled, so here's to hoping that I'll be flying on the 789! That said, if the flight remains a 77W that wouldn't be half bad either (just hoping that it doesn't get swapped to a 77D or something).

Frankly the 77W seats in J and Y are both superior than the 787. I'd be a bit disappointed if they swapped for my flight.

The 789 is slated to have the new B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seats in J, which IMHO are as good as, if not better than, the Zodiac Cirrus J seats on the 77W. Having flown in the Cirrus seats before, it would be nice to try a new hard product!

That said, I agree that the custom Zodiac seats on the 788 and 77D are inferior to either of the two products above. So, my preference for seats would be: 789/350 > (maybe) 77W >>> 788/77D.

Looks like DFW-LHR will receive GRU's 77W? Looks like all DFW-LHR services for W2016/17 will be operated by 77W (up to 3 daily on certain days).

If the B/E Super Diamond 789/350 J seats are similar to QR's 787/350/380, I very much prefer the Cirrus 77W. The B/E SD seat's TV is at a fixed position and can't be pushed back making the legroom smaller than the unobstructed Cirrus 77W.

On the other hand, the B/E super diamond does not require the TV to be stowed for takeoff and landing, so you can enjoy the IFE gate to gate.

It appears DFW-GRU/MAD will switch over to the 787-9 on November 4, based on first being zeroed out on both flights starting this date. AA is scheduled to have three 787-9s at this time.

Hopefully they improve the J seat from the 788 and run the 789 for LAX-AKL.

I might be doing that route somewhat regularly. Was really impressed by J seat in 77W to SYD. Being 6'5" I'm not too excited about worse/smaller J seat in 788.

Now the big question will be how with PEY be handled on these flights.
