Getting there:

From DFW airport: taxi (three miles, $19.50 each way due to taxi minima)

Über.

Unofficial: look for crew bus area, take AA Training and Conference Center / Flight Academy shuttle bus (half-hourly) and get dropped off at Museum. N. B. Transport is space available only (employees on business have priority).

And generic driving instructions (but not to the Museum specifically-- to AATCC):
"From D/FW Airport:
Take the South exit out of DFW. Take the Highway 360 South Arlington exit, which bears to the right. Exit 1/4 mile onto the access road to FAA Road. Continue to the three-way stop sign. Go straight through intersection. "

1.- You take the shuttle from your terminal to the South Remote Parking Lot. (I believe it's free, and every 15min)
2.- You take the shuttle from the South Remote Parking Lot to the "Centreport/DFW" TRE Station. (I believe it's free, and every 15 min)
3.- You take the "T 30 Centreport Circulator" which costs $1.50 o/w from the Centerport/DFW TRE Station to the AA Flight Academy. The catch: It's only Monday through Friday, 1 bus every 45 minutes and it just works during commuting time (6:00 to 8:00 and 15:00 to 18:00)...

Thanks for sharing those!

Did you get up into the DC-3? The "galley" and "lav" are pretty - basic!

I should have taken from inside the DC-3, oh well! I didn't realize that you could go into the lav. Now I need to go back!

I'll be having a 6 hour stopover at DFW and I really want to go to the museum, but I'm a cheap student not willing to spend more than a couple of bucks to go there so I made some googling and what I could get was:

Maybe a local can confirm me this? I will be trying it on my stopover but that will be in some months, but if anyone tries it before I do, please post your results!.

As Ive said before, the employee shuttle is faster, more direct and also free (as you exit a terminal they usually stop at one extreme or the other - ask.) But if it is close to full (never seen that,) it's definitely time to take an alternative mode of transport. Back is easier - go to the Academy and catch it there (ask the gate guard - they're usually helpful,) and one time a museum volunteer drive me back.)

But be prepared in case you are going to be close on departure time.

Sorry to conjure up this thread.

I have a long layover at DFW next week. Is it okay for me to dial 113 at DFW Airport to call a courtesy shuttle to the AA Training & Conference Center, just to get to the CR Smith Museum? http://www.iaam.org/schools/avss/travel.htm

Or will they deny me because I don't have a reservation?

I am planning to stop here on my way for a MR to FRA. I'm underage and therefore can't rent a car. Does anyone know how long the walk is from the remote south parking and if it is safe? I'm also looking into taking the shuttle from the training center.

It's a long walk and you'd have to cross at least one freeway. Take the shuttle.

Except for getting run over it's safe though. Besides the highways it's mostly trees & grass down that way I would call it a hike. In my last job, I worked for a contractor who replaced the old (70mm or so)film projector in the theater with the digital equivalent. It turned out great. That was a few years ago. I enjoyed wandering around. They had some old pilots that would chat it up and fly in the kind of simulator with you.^

No, too many freeways that intersect in that area. Walking is not practical, even though I suppose you could do it.

It's 4.1 mi. if you walk down County Line Rd from the rental car ctr.(not even the shortest route) No highways. Lots of trees & grass.

Does anyone on here have experience taking the shuttle to the AA training center/conference center? Will I be able to board the shuttle and then ride back??

On my last weekend FRA MR, I just sucked up $57.00 at Alamo and drove to the museum. BEST TIME KILLER EVER! It was totally cool to actually get inside a DC-3!

I hope AA is reading this! This shows that people are interested in going to the CR Smith Museum as a time killer if there was a way to get there without renting a car.

Hopefully DFW will figure out some method of linking the rental car center, TRE and DART stations, and the CR Smith Museum with some form of rail link (remember the landside TrAAin anyone? ). At least unlike LAX, DFW has abundant lands surrounding the airport and less bureaucratic red-tape to get the ball rolling if needed.

The rumor is that the DFW DART station for the Orange Line (from the Bachman/Northwest Highway Station) will be located at either the airport's north entrance (my guess) or just south of Terminal D in December, 2013. It will enter a multi-modal station that is planned to accommodate a TRE rail connector and Skylink.
