NOTE: The last C45 777-223ER was retrofitted to C37 and Premium Economy at KPAE and returned to service 11 December 2018. Please see the new “Which 777-200ER?” thread here.
- Two J seats, two configurations as of 1/1/2019: Two, 37J Zodiac in 20 772 and Super Diamond in 27.
The final two Boeing 777-200 left to be retrofit (aircraft registrations N759AN and N795AN) entered the shop at the end of November. With these out of service, all 777-200s operating going forward will have the following configuration:
37 Business (1-2-1 arrangement)
24 Premium Economy (2-4-2)
66 Main Cabin Extra (3-4-3)
146 Economy (3-4-3)

NOTE: On aa.com, seat charts make it difficult to identify which 777 has Zodiac or B/E Aerospace seats. See post #1 for the AA seat diagrams of the 777 Business cabins.
If the available (blue) seats have a notch in the front signifying aft (backward) facing seats, it’s a Zodiac “Concept D” Business Suite equipped aircraft.
If the available (blue) seats have NO notch in the front (are perfectly square), it’s a B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo equipped aircraft.

Longboater states the last 777 pre-CIP changes to CIP flight was 772 MIA-SCL July 5, 2017. The last old "NGBC" aircraft went to HAECO HKG 23 July 2017 for refitting.
The Points Guy (link) states AA will begin retrofitting 772s with three rows of 2-4-2 seating Premium Economy in June 2017 and finish in Q2 of 2018. AA will treat these as Main Cabin Extra for sales purposes until 15 Dec 2017.
There are 47 Boeing 777-223ER total in the AA fleet. They may be as follows:
13 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with 45 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 55 Main Cabin Extra and 160 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 2" seat chart.
6 refurbished 777-200ER (AA coded "772") with with 37 Business seats with full flat solo suites with all aisle access, forward and aft facing, with the Zodiac Concept D Business Suite in Business, 58 Main Cabin Extra and 194 Economy seats. Link to SeatGuru "version 3" with 37 J seats.
The remainder of the 28 777-200ER fleet (currently AA coded as "772") is comprised of aircraft with 37 B/E Aerospace Super Diamond Solo all forward facing (at an angle to the fuselage center line) Business class, 58 MCE and 194 Economy seats. (No seat chart on SeatGuru yet, but the "Version 3" will probably suffice for MCE and Economy.)"
NOTE:,Premium Economy seating to be added (completion June 2018) resulting in loss of some Economy seats.

Zodiac Concept D Business Suite seat production problem slowed the CIP / refit to a crawl. (The Zodiac contract was terminated and a suit filed against Zodiac 24 Sep 2015.)
The airframes required infrastructure changes to support the new seats etc. and the reconfiguration was accomplished at the airframe's scheduled maintenance "C" check (performed by HAECO at HKG):
Widebody "C" Checks
Because of the complexity of widebody aircraft, all "C" checks are "Heavy C" checks. The complete airframe inspection and service is done every 24 - 30 months. It takes approximately 10,000 man-hours and from two to four weeks to accomplish a widebody "C" check.

If AA is listing flight 80 as a 772, then unfortunately it will be the 45J forward-rear facing Zodiac Concept D seat, and not the reverse herringbone seat like the 77W or many of the lower J (37) 772s with the Super Diamond seat.

The seatmap looks exactly like the 1-2-1 77W seatmap. I can't stand the reverse seats, and I don't want the shaking seats either.

The seat map for a 772 and 77W will look basically the same on ExpertFlyer, but not on AA.com. It will still be 1-2-1 but you will see chevrons showing rear facing seats.

I personally think the 772 rear facing Zodiac seat is my 2nd favorite on AA... behind the 77W but ahead of the new Super Diamond seat. That's just me. I like the privacy a lot.
I been in that seat on 5 round trips and haven't had an issue with the shaking. But others have. I suppose it just depends on who you get as seated next to you.
7A/7L are unconnected and are the choices of those weary of the motion issues.
Also, AA claims they are working to fix this but no one knows for sure when, how, etc.

Yes but N767AJ per flightaware have NRT-DFW on the same day at 10:50AM (instead of 10:40AM), besides NRT-DFW route is served by a retrofitted aircraft and they are using N797AN to reposition the aircraft. If you check the seat map for AA176 on the 31st, AA will show you a 772 CIP

Updated wiki to reflect N767AJ returning to the fleet refurbished on 3/30 while N797AN is in Tokyo poised to travel to HKG likely tomorrow to begin refurbishment.
72% (34 of 47) of the fleet is complete with 19% (9 of 47) still in the old F configuration.

N789AN is flying back from HAECO on AA176. Brings number of total complete to 35. N771AN is now at HAECO receiving the new interior. Barring anything unforeseen, N791AN will be exiting HAECO with the new interior. We're at or one aircraft away from a point where a reconfigured 772 is more likely to sub in for a non-reconfigured 772 than the other way around, which was common place over the past couple of years. I'm glad AA is finally on the homestretch for eliminating their outmoded 16F/37J/194Y configuration on their 772s. I, like many on this forum, will be curious to see what happens when these aircraft have W added and whether the subfleet of 13 45J seat 772s will remain.

Just to confirm, as of this morning, AA's internal inventory shows:
22 low-J, and 13 high-J, 10 unconverted (with, yes, that last # always missing one or two and lagging behind a bit.)

As stated earlier, N789AN is flying back today, N767AJ flew back last Friday, and N791AN likely back at this time next week. I take it AA's internals do not update automatically.
