Shockingly good in F from KOA-SEA today, 8/2 AS854. That would be a Taro/Ube (couldn’t tell) roll, with the beef filet, salad, and a sort of passionfruit cake. Normally meals are decent, good microwave quality, but today was awesome. Great job Alaska! We did not get a cookie but perhaps the cake makes up for that.

My neighbor had the onion frittata, I passed on that as I hate onions but it also looked pretty good. My son pre-ordered the fruit and cheese plate, which came with yogurt. There was one pass of the snack basket about an hour before landing; I selected the pea-toes based on reviews here and was not let down. We landed around an hour early due to favorable winds, all in all a very smooth flight although JFK Terminal 1 is pretty sad these days.

I was hesitant but tried the Bahn-mi. It was OK. The pickled slaw and Sriracha really made the sandwich. The bread was a bit too thick and some small bits were very soggy. Also, the banhmi had this sauce (Sriracha mayo???) that didn't really belong in a banhmi, imo. Overall though, it was fine. I woke up hungover that day so the carby bread was really appreciated. 😂

Have several AS transcon flights in F coming up in March/April. Have there been any rumors of late regarding returning some semblance of traditional meal service on these flights 6+ hr flights? AA, B6, and UA have all figured out how to safely provide hot meals and mixed beverages on their premium transcon routes (yes, I’m aware DL is still an outlier).

I wouldn't hold your breath on hot meal or hard alcohol. It took them 6 months to change from curry wrap to something else. As long as covid is still around, they will keep using it as an excuse to cut cost and provide the bare minimum services. If you prefer hot meals or flat bed then book with UA/AA/B6. If AS provides the most convenient route and you want to save money and still get decent leg room and some prepackaged food then go with AS.

Several months ago UA started offering sandwiches out of select locations (all of their domestic hubs & several outstations), although I like the AS sandwich better.

The food is fine but the lack of hard alcohol really makes no sense. I flew on AA widebody MIA-ORD and ORD-DFW and was offered pretty much unlimited alcohol. Pocket 5 bottles of aviation to use later. Those are not even transcon flights and I don't see any difference between offering IPA/wine versus other liquor. Oh well I'll just abandon AS the moment I finish my mileage runs anyway.

Flying SAN-PDX and back next week, up on SkyWest and back on Mainline, in F both ways.

I don't mind either of the two sandwiches but they get very old when you get 4 of them in two days.....if they can do a sandwich, why can't they do a variety so that you at least have a chance of something with a different flavor. A packet of chips would be nice as well as would consistency with the fruit and the chocolate. The whole catering program right now seems very hit and miss and very boring. It gets a bit sad to hear repeatedly that "covid this" and "covid that." Covid hasn't stopped a sandwich being served so what is stopping a variety and the other stuff? There no reason a sealed sandwich can't be warm as well...just a total lack of quality control and creativity. Easy enough to bring my own and now I do because I really can't take the same sandwich twice a day .... it's not that good!
