829 EUR to J from a cheap Y ticket isn't bad (not sure how cheap your miles ticket was). Flights to the US are [getting] full. I wouldn't expect any bargains during the next several weeks.

my one way was 26,5 k miles (went from 60k to 26,5 and as of now still 26,5 k as it seems Y is not that full), not far from the cheapest possible which is 22k. So yes the 829 is not bad!

Realize I had posted this in the KL forum. So will copy/paste:
Flying MEX-CDG tonight local time (this was on November 2, ed.). Had been requesting an upgrade on miles some days in advance (AF took several days to reply on SoMe), but was told no upgrade space available, despite J looking wide open.
Upon check-in, I hit bingo. A mere 289EUR to upgrade from W to J on a 10h45m redeye flight. Probably the most generous offer I ever had. Taken with no hesitation.

Assuming that the lowest miles price for an award ticket in J isn't readily available (around 60000 + "taxes" or something like that), which is a pretty fair assumption now, then the 26.5K+829 EUR is a good deal -- particularly when the flights are getting full.

AirFrance uses for CDG-CUN a 77W with small business class for 14 seats (which are almost always sold out). Therefore probably it was fully occupied before Check in.

KLM want £147 for AMS-BEG. That's for a 2 hour flight that appears to have 0 out of 8 seats occupied. It took me about 1 second to reject that.

CDG-DXB : €309 W to J (award ticket). My purgatory period was obviously (temporarily ?) ended, so I took it to enjoy heaven .
DXB-CDG : was ticketed in J. No P upgrade proposed as P was full.
note : the 2 flights were totally packed
