As someone who does this regularly I don't see what the issue is. Often times the savings is a couple hundreds dollars on a long haul. When it's your own money you value it differently than when it's OPM. In addition, the lounges (i.e. the NH lounge at NRT) more than make up for the inconvenience. I don't mind taking a pit stop en-route to SIN from YYZ at NRT to clean up and feel better after sitting in steerage that long. There are also times where splitting it up may make sense from an upgrade sense (i.e. ORD->HNL isn't CPU eligible but ORD -> SFO and SFO -> HNL are). Finally, some of us don't want to fly an AC 777HD across the Pacific and would much prefer flying UA in their free E+ seating.

Why does everyone assume that people who fly OPM for work are irresponsible and cavalier about it? Do you have any idea the restrictions imposed on most of us?

Most people don't have those restrictions. Smarter employers fully recognize that time is money and not simply on an hour-for-hour basis.
In this particular case, the issue is not whether an experienced traveler can tolerate the journey. IRROPS is part of life and reducing the risk for people who are not sophisticated and may have other barriers is a factor. On the other hand, savings may be the difference between taking the trip or not.

IRROPS sucks even for those of us that speak the native language and have enough status with the airline to be handled expediently. I feel badly for these people but also super confident that AC will handle it and if the advice written above is followed the language issue is almost a non-factor.

What is the listed reason for the delay? I know there have previously been discussion about how AC treats people in transit for weather (as I have posted, a friend was not comped a hotel) so am hoping AC will do the right thing and provide a hotel here.

I know Air Canada would not be responsible for weather delay and passengers need to find their own accommodation, which is my own concern.

Air Canada did not list a reason for delay as far as I could see on their website. My friend in Toronto td me that ot is sunny and warm over there. It was sunny in Tokyo on the day ofdepartureas well. I guess the delay is not weather related.

Sort of correct here. The * policy states pax on a trip between continents on a partner airline will be given food, hotel, ground transportation vouchers at any point in their journey, even on domestic segments like YYZ>DFW so long as the cause of the delay is something within the airlines control (I.e. not weather related). For VIPs (*Golds and pax in J/F) this policy extends for all causes including weather. Note this policy is in addition to whatever governing law dictates they're entitled to (I.e. EU compensation).
In practice depending on the circumstances * partners may at their discretion provide these benefits for all passengers for weather even on domestic only trips.

I believe some people have the ability (EF?) to get the actual remarks for the flight which should list more details. But not always, nor do they always make sense.
However, it is an international trip as has been mentioned that so that should help.

AC 595 could have a delay, but it's not guaranteed.
Unless they land after 595 has already pushed back, they need to just proceed as if they're going to make their flight.
