FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jc94
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

after reading of a damaged violin I am intrigued by learning that some airlines have a second seat purchase policy for valuable or delicate equipment...

Well what if part of it breaks and needs to be replaced? It sounds like taking any reasonably-sized component out would get it under 70 pounds. Otherwise it looks like UPS ground is about $76 for a 76 pound box, which I suppose is cheaper than booking a trip just to fly it. Though I suspect we'll both be in the same city again in the near future.

Also my roommate and I would be quite amenable to a weekend trip to LAS, especially if we can return with a prize

As for a second seat... there's no way that's going to be cheaper than other options. But it would be amusing

I don't think you can checkin a random piece of baggage to it's own seat, I think it's just musical instruments that get that privilege ... so you may need to put strings on this coke machine.

Any given object made of non-unobtanium will harmonate if you yell at it just right.

The interesting question is what seat on an A321 will that spontaneous modulation happen?

I can't possibly see how driving SFO-LAS and back in any vehicle is going to be cheaper than $76.

It's almost a 9 hour drive. So I'd definitely need a car for two days. The cheapest Zipcar available to me is $79/day.

At that price, I could actually fly round-trip in Y. And as much as I hate Y, it's better than driving.

Yes but it solves the luggage issue? I am not sure what the overweight cost it past 32kg but I imagine it to be quite a lot.

I still refuse to believe that a screwdriver and an engineering degree won't result in two items under 70 pounds that can be reassembled into a functional product.

And as I said, mailing it will cost $76. I'm not driving for 18 hours at a cost of twice that

In summer you could make a nice road trip out of it. Death Valley, CA395, Tioga Pass, Yosemite. Take 3 or 4 days.

My spares are not in Nevada... Closer to Buffalo/Niagara

LAS to SFO would be a cheap $30 one way car rental and a $50 flight back.

Buy a full J fare from anywhere to anywhere, check the widget. Never clear security, cancel the ticket before take off.

Have lost & found ship it wherever.

So this is the airline version of mailing something with no postage and the intended destination as the return address?

Oh that's less fun. Roommate's from ROC though, so that could actually be easy.
