The idea that they would devalue CC points in a way some are suggesting here doesn't make sense. These systems are profit centres because of credit cards. AA and UA are finding credit card signups are lower than expected likely due to devaluations of their programs.

On points transfer, from the FAQ:
Q: Will I be able to transfer my Aeroplan Miles into the new Air Canada program?
A: No. Aeroplan Miles earned up to June 2020 stay in the Aeroplan program and may be redeemed for Aeroplan Rewards. That said, Air Canada expects to continue making Air Canada flights available for Aeroplan redemption. Star Alliance partner rewards will only be available through the new Air Canada program.
My issue is that there is simply no way that I won't end up stranding 1m+ points. I have 1.5m now, even if I burn all those in the next 2-3 years, I will earn another 1-2m in the next 3 years. Assuming flying patters remain the same, any SE is going to strand at least 3 or 4 hundred thousands points (the amount they will earn in 2019). Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Not to mention that without AC I would imagine AE has a moderate chance of flat out going bankrupt, rendering all points worthless.
Either AC really truly doesn't care at all about how this impacts AE/AC/Altitude members, it is a ploy to drive AE into a market value of $1 so they can be bought cheaply, or they just didn't think this through...

I feel your pain - this would be the pain I went through when we had a million points to burn through the last time they were expiring. Doing that while still flying regularly for work meant we wasted about half those points, including giving away J-class tickets to our kids (J-class YVR to SFO for example, sigh...) in order to not lose the points we had been saving for retirement.
Then Aeroplan/AC relented and said the points wouldn't expire. Aeroplan/AC robbed us of our retirement travel fund. And no, I've never forgiven them.
The Aeroplan credit card was dumped years ago in favour of a card with cash back (so I can use the cash back to pay for my 'free' flights.)
We still fly AC only because waiting for us at the end of the trip that burned 350K miles for a jaunt over to Hungary was the MM status box. But now we only fly the cheapest seats we can find since we get lounge and luggage allowance upgrades, and if we are flying J, book on other airlines when possible.
Now they are about to rob many of you. Good luck and my sympathies.
We have almost 100K left so we'll look for a Star Alliance award to burn those on.

I don't think it would be tolerated by market security... Announcing news which have a huge impact on stock market and then take advantage of it, is probably illegal.

By the way, saving points for retirement was always risky, devaluation happens all the time and point savings do not produce interests...

BTW last time, they were going to expire. This time those of your left with 1m+ in your accounts are left with useless points. A slight difference!

AC up a buck... somebody must have liked the $2B NPV... quick'n dirty, over 15 years that's about $200m/yr at 7-8% discount rate without any upfront costs considered.
Wow on the whole thing. No real surprise, though.

It sounds to me like an opening to further devalue one's points.
