I think I got a great deal out of this one!!

MCO-YHZ on Feb 13th (The day of the Great Blizzard of 2017)
I bid $125 USD and the bid was accepted!
My husband was on a separate PNR and I put the same offer for him and his was declined :(

Due to the blizzard, they put me on MCO-YYZ-YHZ (YYZ-YHZ lie flat pods) and they kept me in business class but somehow my class of service went from R class to C class, so I should also get COS Bonus.

The downside? Flying in business class with my husband in economy on Valentines day. I'm still hearing about it and there is no end in sight.

canadiancow Feb 16, 2017 5:02 pm

Ack.

I suppose that's why one PNR is better than two.

But nice price!

In other words, upgrades cost anywhere from $1,700 to $5,450 which puts my total trip cost at about $2,875 to $6,625.

If I were to buy a business class ticket today, I'd be charged about $3,600. So I guess I can save a few hundred dollars if bids at the lower end of the scale get accepted, but if I stick with "good" bids, I'd overpay for J to the tune of $600+.

If anyone has the option to make a minimum bid in the $400 range for YVR-YYZ in the last month or in the future please post and say so. My rambling reasoning as to why I would like to know if this can be done is below should you be interested.

Because of future travel plans, I had aquick trawl through this thread for references to minimum bids on the YVR<->YYZ route to help me decide whether to be a bidder or an R gamer. Alas, the sample size appears to be quite small (5 I think), with the earliest minimums being ~$400 and the more recent reports being $600-$800. Advance purchase Tango and Flex fares on this route at popular times typically cost $280 and $550 respectively. As you know, losing the auction has a benefit of overthe R games because you get to pay less to sit in the same seat (fewer AQM andhigher change fees aside).

I would like to know if the reported difference in the floor bid from $400 to $600+ simply reflects a difference inavailable seats for those particular flights or reflects a change in theabsolute minimum bid that AC will allow regardless of conditions on this route. If it is always going to be $600 or higher, I might just stick with the R Games. But if it varies with demand and could go as low as $400 then tango looks preferable. I expect that flights on which I am likely to win the R Games as a lowly E50 are the same flights on which a minimum bid is also likely to be accepted. So with a $400 floor or less, even if I do not know what the minimum bid for my flight will be at time of purchase, I am content to chance it. If my $400 bid is outbid or not even an option, I am content to keep the money I saved (and still get a slim chance at an op-up if IIROPS happen after the auction closes). I am much less content when I lose the R games.

If the floor is now $600, I might just stick to the R games. I am not worried about (m)any bidders crowding out eUpgraders at those prices.

I requested an upgrade IAH-YYZ from an M fare at T-13 and was waitlisted. Today, T-12, I receive an email with the opportunity to bid for that same upgrade. Obviously I declined.

I guess as a SE on a flight pass, I might need to sit at the back while a non-status passenger on a Tango fare enjoys J.

I'd like to point out that someone else bid on an upgrade when R was positive, and their bid was rejected.

So I wouldn't assume someone on a cheap fare will get your seat.

The only time I've ever had a paid upgrade impact "my" eUpgrade was when I tried to upgrade a friend on SFO-YYZ, but they sold the upgrade at the expense of a no-status passenger (though it pissed me off immensely).

Complaints like yours are why passengers waitlisted for upgrades aren't even offered LMUs. I'd at least rather have the option.

Thanks. The upgrade will probably clear at the gate, with ML1 and no meal. Another pet peeve of mine.

Ironically, for fun I clicked through to the bid page. My outbound wasn't available because I have already upgraded it. My return was listed twice, and neither was available for bidding. I guess, because I am waitlisted, I cannot bid.

This is a stellar IT fail. Why send the email in the first place? I guess the programmer just considered non-J fares but forgot to add a basic loop to check for waitlist status. I think I learned how to do that in Fortran back in 1st year Engineering school. None of that fancy programming stuff they use now.

Meals are catered based on expected loads at departure, so for a 10 seat plane with 3 for sale and you on the list, they're going to cater at least 8 meals.

That being said, if someone buys a J seat after the inbound takes off (I assume it's double catered), they'll have priority over you for whatever meals are available.

Really? Wouldn't the pax booking the last-minute ticket not get a ML*1, too? (i.e. both pax would have the ML*1 and it would presumably boil down to status)

No.

ML*1 is a gate upgrade.
ML*2 is standby.

A paid J ticket is neither.

You want to scare a SD, book a J ticket after the inbound takes off for a flight where they catered no food, and then ask for food :p

Interesting. I could've sworn I've had a ML*1 in other circumstances (such as being on a paid J fare and being rebooked last-minute on to another flight due to IRROPs), but it's been a while, so I may be wrong.

EDIT: Seems like you may be right per this thread

Just checked my aeroplan transactions and I got my COS for my upgrade. Not sure why/how the agent put me in C class after the bid, but I'm grateful.
