No "route" is tough.
I've been the only one in J on SFO-YVR Saturday at 6am.
I've missed an upgrade as SE in M on SFO-YVR Saturday at 6am.
If you're flying the Thursday red-eye, it's tough. But I've flown SFO-YYZ many times with empty J seats, or deadheading flight attendants in J, etc.
