Looks like Air Canada quietly updated their seat selection policy

According to THIS link at aircanada.com

Passengers travelling with children under the age of 12 will receive complimentary seat assignment ensuring children are seated adjacent to an adult/guardian travelling with them. Customers may contact Air Canada Reservations directly to be seated or review their reservation 36 hours after booking to validate their seat assignments. Customers should always indicate in their booking they are travelling with children.

Common sense prevails. Now that wasn't hard was it? If only they hadn't got greedy to start with. Just a pity that they had to be shamed into doing the right thing.

The policy change was announced 30th April as was noted in post #260 of this thread.

Wrong. Good to see that the Transport Minister got enough complaints and notifications from Canadians to "urge" Air Canada to do the right thing.

While I am not Canadian (former resident, landed inmigrant) the term "urges" from the Transport Minister is shorthand for 'fix this now, or we draft legislation'.

Thank you Lisa Raitt for forcing AC to allow logic to prevail.

Exactly, it behooved AC to institute a voluntary policy they can tweak later instead of being subject to legislation they can't control.

Btw, there was a slight change in government last year, Marc Garneau is at Transport now.

Cheers

Common sense is, to me, if you can't pay seat assignment fees (or be exempt from them) when going on holiday with your children, you can't afford the holiday.

It's a principal thing... if the airline says my child under 12 can't fly alone, why does the airline split us up in seat assignment?

Wouldn't it be fair to make them pay for compulsory seat assignment?

Really? What does being able to afford have to do with anything? Some charges are unfair or unreasonable even if you can afford them.

Kids can fly alone on AC ages 8 - 11 and are called unaccompanied minors.

Isn't there a ~$100 fee for that though?

So would you prefer that instead of having a $30 seat selection fee, all Tango fares went up by $30?
