AC 18 TPE-YVR July 2018

I had the exact same meal as another AC 18 back in April - post 2122. Also one of my favourites.

Menu not available on the website.

I love these kind of photos.

I ate the salmon and the mango salsa. Yum. Left the rest.

Breads were cold, so I skipped those.

Looks nice.

I really like this halibut dish, just as I did the first time months ago. Veggies were crisp.
Only problem - it was all cold.

Chocolate cherry cake. One of my favourite desserts. Had it the first time in January.

Cake porn.

My favourite breakfast items ex-TPE

Mmmmmmmmm

Chive omelette. Better than the foam version on transcons.

gabdusch and jasdou like this.

Halibut out of Taiwan? Either it's a local fish that's similar, or it is imported, which sounds unlikely. I wonder if looking at the Chinese menu the fish would be more identifiable. (In this instance French won't help...)

BTW at least if cold it won't be too dry. Which is probably why it looks good on the picture.

Yogurt from Hsinchu? I thought they only had heavy metal and rice paddies there. But cows?

Moo. No idea, but it is tasty.

This "halibut" or whatever was excellent the first time I had it on the first April trip (post 2122) but was not on the same flight about a week later.

As I wrote in post 2132:
"Warm fish.....on an ice cold plate. Again.

Also, this halibut dish was nothing like the one from the previous AC 18 posted upthread. The piece was much smaller, the sides were bland, most especially the peas-carrots-rice. Also rather uninspiring. The menu said it was pumpkin but I can tell you it had no taste."

And since you asked, here is the Chinese page of the menu from this week:

I am told in Chinese there is no specific name but it says something like "a flat fish with both eyes on the same side." Which of course could describe a halibut. But more likely, either a local flat fish of the family of halibut/sole/brill etc. Or one imported from NZ. Which is still more likely than a fish imported from north America or Europe.

Which the caterer or AC would have no hesitation in translating into something familaiar to Canadians...

Two months of dates have been greyed out on the Air Canada Menu pages for certain flights Ive been looking at. Today it seemed to be working, but just now, for YVR-TPE and YVR-HKG, this is what I see (broken links). I'm getting very frustrated with Air Canada here as I value meals on long hauls and it's difficult to book flights when Air Canada makes it so tedious for me to find out what is being served. If only the MM program was not somewhat valuable I would just fly another carrier. Unfortunately I am far too close at this point to the next tier.

Same here for a transatlantic leg. But eh, some progress at least. Let's not be too greedy.

I figured it out after reading this site from top to bottom: As per AC:

-So exciting that we can't even tell you until your flight.

Anyone has any explanation on why AC can even get this simple task done?

Menus haven't been prepared?

Someone is too busy to upload them to the website?

IT issue?

Apparently at AC, gravity points upward.

I suspect a catering issue. Once a menu gets posted a certain customer expectation is set. Perhaps meals are decided last minute on AC?

My guess is that it's not a catering issue because the logistics behind catering is complicated, so some planning is required. I remember there is a youtube video about SQ (or EK?) catering, menus are designed months in advance.

For certain AC meal items, such as NA breakfast, salad, cheese on outbound flights, and that famous Hawksworth chocolate cake, seemed to be decided years ahead.

Actually the menu for my next flight used to be available on the web site. Not anymore. I don't expect that it has changed in the mean time.

It depends. It can also be simply a phonetic translation into characters that sound like the name, like Salmon (which happens to be mentioned in that menu).

Oh I have no doubt things are well planned from a catering perspective for certain airlines, and I too have seen that SQ video/documentary. I'm not so sure AC has it all figured out though.

How long has Air Canada been working on advance meal ordering again?

I was not trying to make a general statement. Merely talking about that particular halibut. Just quoting my resident interpreter.
