Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) collected on the following airlines:

Air Canada (AC)
Lufthansa (LH)
All Nippon Airways (NH)
Asiana (OZ)
Thai (TG)
Austrian Airlines (OS)
LOT Polish Airlines (LO)
TAP Portugal (TP)
Adria Airways (JP)

Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) NOT charged on these airlines:

Aegean Airlines (A3)
Air China (CA)
Air India (AI)
Air New Zealand (NZ)
Avianca/TACA (AV)
Brussels (SN)
Copa (CM)
Croatia (OU)
EgyptAir (MS)
Ethiopian (ET)
Eva Air (BR)
SAS (SK)
Shenzhen (ZH)
Singapore (SQ)
South African Airways (SA)
Swiss (LX)
Turkish (TK)
United (UA)

*Keep in mind AC charges YQ for the entire trip sometimes, so if you do YYZ-PVG-MEL on AC/CA or YYZ-NRT-AKL on AC/NZ, even though the last two segments are not supposed to be charged YQ - AC will charge YQ based on distance of YYZ-MEL/AKL.

Aeroplan's last official statement on fuel surcharges including an important statement that all fuel surcharges are requested by AC, and not by AE or the operating carriers: All fuel surcharge amounts are applied by Aeroplan on behalf of the ticketing carrier and are passed through directly to the ticketing carrier.

Which list - the surcharge list, or the no surcharge list?

AC is following the competition in terms of YQ charges. They are very competitive with Euro carriers ex Canada on flights to the continent. They seem to be very close to BA on routes between Canada and LHR. The YQ charge seems to fluctuate somewhat depending on the season so I presume it follows a pattern as a % of full fare tickets which is what BA does as I am told.

Thus charges to Asia are quite a bit less as they are keeping up with the competition on direct overseas flights ex Canada.

AI would be under the no YQ.

I just booked a first/business class trip to BOM in late Dec. for $115 taxes in. Sure it's 2 connections, but the long leg (ORD-DEL) is in first.

I flew AI when I was younger in the mid 90's and never thought I would again, but for the price and the fact that they have only 4 first class seats on my flight (from what I can tell) it's worth it!

FYI anyone can edit the thread wiki to include AI in those airlines without YQ.

I have updated the list at post 111, removing OZ and adding AI.

Too bad the OZ bug is dead

Any new tips on finding low YQ reward flights? ANA no longer works for me as I don't have enough ANA miles to search for partner flights, can only search on ANA metal (don't know when that came in).

Been looking at SYD in Feb, and even searching LAX-SYD on the aeroplan site only shows rouge to YVR then AC. For 4, the AC surcharge YVR-SYD is $2,880 even in Y...
thx

You can still use ANA. Check this blog post out to see how.

OZ scamcharges now equal to AC / LH?

Just looking at a J redemption to Vienna in the spring, flying YYZ-VIE.

Direct J on OS both ways, surcharges come to $1,021.26.

Flying AC-J to FRA and then LH-J to VIE, surcharges come to $1,119.26.

I thought OS was supposed to be one of the better options?

OZ is one of the better options, but OZ is Asiana not Austrian.

You might want to try LOT via WAW as they have lower YQ.
