Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) collected on the following airlines:
Air Canada (AC)
Lufthansa (LH)
All Nippon Airways (NH)
Asiana (OZ)
Thai (TG)
Austrian Airlines (OS)
LOT Polish Airlines (LO)
TAP Portugal (TP)
Adria Airways (JP)
Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) NOT charged on these airlines:
Aegean Airlines (A3)
Air China (CA)
Air India (AI)
Air New Zealand (NZ)
Avianca/TACA (AV)
Brussels (SN)
Copa (CM)
Croatia (OU)
EgyptAir (MS)
Ethiopian (ET)
Eva Air (BR)
SAS (SK)
Shenzhen (ZH)
Singapore (SQ)
South African Airways (SA)
Swiss (LX)
Turkish (TK)
United (UA)
*Keep in mind AC charges YQ for the entire trip sometimes, so if you do YYZ-PVG-MEL on AC/CA or YYZ-NRT-AKL on AC/NZ, even though the last two segments are not supposed to be charged YQ - AC will charge YQ based on distance of YYZ-MEL/AKL.
Aeroplan's last official statement on fuel surcharges including an important statement that all fuel surcharges are requested by AC, and not by AE or the operating carriers: All fuel surcharge amounts are applied by Aeroplan on behalf of the ticketing carrier and are passed through directly to the ticketing carrier.

SQ eliminating fuel surcharges on redemptions
Mods - didn't want to start a new thread. If you think this topic needs one, feel free to move. That.
-------
This short article mentions Aeroplan, therefore I'm posting.
I loved the part:
"Fuel surcharges are pretty disingenuous, it’s like a franchise fee charged by McDonalds or a rent fee charged by your dry cleaner. For paid tickets they gave the airline the ability to raise or lower all fares in a market by adjusting a single fee, rather than having to re-file all fares.
Once the price of fuel dropped about in half, some airlines stopped calling them fuel surcharges and called them a junk fee — “carrier-imposed surcharges.”"
Sound familiar??????
Read the article for the details and other points.

Perhaps someone should write Gary to correct him then, since the article 24L linked to days they did.

AC negotiates the amount with other airlines, and money changes hands.
United says "we pay you no YQ, you pay us no YQ, take it or leave it", and everyone takes the deal. Although I'm even less certain of that now, given that they charge way more miles for premium cabin partner redemptions. It's almost as if they have to send a payment above and beyond what the base miles are worth.

It's a negotiated deal between every pair of airlines.

United charging more/less points than Aeroplan on any given route has nothing to do with Star Alliance payment, they are competing.. errr. matching with the amounts AA and DL charge for awards.
Each award chart has its sweetspots. A few hundred thousand in each account helps deal with devaluations and allows for choosing flights based on needs and value at the same time.

I think that from semantic perspective, the term "scamcharges" accurately conveys common perception of AC actions. Having said that, it lacks legal gravitas and colloquially stops short of implying theft. I think AC makes a grave error and might one day pay dearly for not being completely transparent on this subject.

Further to Gary Leff's column and the posts above, I was just reading TPG
Quote:
"Since the airline is removing fuel surcharges and insurance fees altogether, you won’t have to pay these when you book Singapore flights through partners like Aeroplan. Unfortunately, however, it’s unlikely that you’d be able to book premium-cabin Singapore awards using Aeroplan miles, given how stingy the airline is in releasing award space to its partners."

I'm looking to book an award with NH using aeroplan. There was talk awhile back abut NH cutting fuel surcharges. Is the wiki up to date and is Aeroplan still charging fuel surcharges for awards booked on NH that are flying into and out of Japan?
