Re: Seat Upgrade - LH

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere.

Mrs booked LH tkt ECO MUC-HKG - H class & wanted to use A3 miles to upgrade to C. Tried via online A/C & shows fare not eligible.
Called CS & just be told only B,Y in ECO & G,E in Pre Eco are eligible for upgrade.
We all know nobody books B or Y , crazy prices so its lesson learned for the future.
Just a heads up to share if not already known

True, very annoying, but it's been like this since many years throughout the alliance...

It's unlikely that you would want to do this, but it may be possible to buy up to the appropriate class and then apply for the upgrade. I don't know what the price increase is likely to be like, but I think "H" is reasonably high up in the economy ecosystem?

If someone would help shed some light for me, that'd be great!

I'm trying to book an award from SIN-SEL (GMP/ICN). I've found flights through HND on NH which Aeroplan and United both say have availability, but the agent says she cannot see the space.

Okay, even after she quoted me a SIN-NRT/HND-GMP on NH, the taxes added up to around 140EUR including the booking charge. Supposedly, ITA Matrix says it should be only 70EUR with the booking fee.

What's going on? (Sorry, first time booking an award)

B or Y price is beyond belief....... however LH are running a PE promotion which works out same price as H class ECO , work that one out !
So for 150 euro can change the tkt to PE N class which also gives 100% miles on A3. Thankfully its reasonable to get out of the hole with the Mrs !!!

Reading this thread looks like best option is build up the miles further & burn on an award tkt.

Glad it worked out for you! Yes, you're usually much better off redeeming miles directly for business or first class tickets.

In any case it seems to me that the shortest direction SGN-GIG (for instance) is in fact transatlantic: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=sgn-gig (the same is true for all the city pairs that Air Rarotonga listed)

Not that it should matter, since A3's rules being what they are (only allowing one connection) there is no reason they shouldn't allow you to do any of the routes listed (besides exceeding MPM, which you'd have to call in to check). SK had good reason to disallow you from doing SGN-ICN-ROR, since a South East Asia-North Asia award was presumably more expensive than an intra-South East Asia award, meaning if they did let people book things like SGN-ICN-ROR willy nilly they were opening themselves up to hidden city ticketing risks. The same is not true in your case, since both Far East-Europe awards and Far East-Central/South Africa awards are cheaper than Far East-Central/South America awards.
Thank you for the insights. I called A3 three times within 45 minutes.

Rep 1: No MPM enforced. Connection via Europe zone not allowed. Connection via N.A. zone allowed. Reason: Far East to S.A. requires same number of points as Far East to N.A. [Hmmm....]

Rep 2: No MPM enforced. You are never allowed to connect in a third zone. Whether you connect in Europe or N.A., you will need to redeem two tix.

Rep 3: No MPM enforced. I have no idea whether it is allowed to connect in a third zone, but let us try. [We finally found availability BKK-IST-GRU]. System tells me this ticket is 150K miles in J. [I did not have the patience to find availability TPAC, but logically this should also be allowed.]

So, Rep 3 yielded the best result. But it is frustrating that I got three different answers (each conveyed with equal conviction). The reps are reluctant (or unable) to discuss these matters in abstract.

Perhaps they were all ex students of mine: I asked told them to always think in concrete ways and not to loose their time in discussing theoretical situations. Which is, probably, why I love Aristotelian logic!

Just called Aegean to try to book an award ticket from MUC-TPE.
On Aeroplan I saw that there is availability from MUC-IST-TPE on 8/27.
But the first agent said that there is nothing available at all on 8/27. I then asked her to check these segments separately, so MUC-IST and IST-TPE. She found availability but told me I would have to book them separately as two tickets.
After like 5 minutes I called the Greek hotline again, but it was the same agent and she told me that availability hasn't changed. So again I hung up,
And called the German hotline. The agent here says that there's nothing available on 8/27 but on 8/25 there's TG via BKK, LH via HKG and TK via IST. On Aeroplan however there's only TK available, but on ANA it shows the same availability like the A3 agent said.
Is this normal? Should I call again to try to push them to book the route as I want or is it pointless?

Any advice is welcome.

Yes. Def call back. If theyre availablr separate, theyre available on one ticket as a connection. Persevere you'll get your way.

Some experience here:

Needed a last minute (next day) OS flight from SOF-VIE. OS wanted 300 EUR for the flight so tried using A3 miles. Relatively painless experience, ended up being 30 EUR of airline taxes & fee + 20 EUR booking fee, and 12,500 miles.

A little annoyed about the booking fee, but I guess still cheaper that the ticket cost.

Does anyone know the tax and fee for booking domestic US flight on United using Aegean mile points?

I'm deciding between using UA miles and A3 miles on ORD-VIE(OS). Apparently UA charges 25000 more miles (45k vs 70k) than A3 to make up for the YQ that A3 charges, doesn't seem to be a bad deal...

I don't see a lot of ex-UA examples in the wiki... Is it because of this: People preferring to spend more miles on UA to pay for YQ?

On the other hand, my understanding is that A3 does not charge YQ on UA TATL flights, so it actually makes more sense to redeem A3 points on UA metal, since it saves 12500 miles (45k vs 57.5k)?

No, I don't believe they do (so long as you get an agent who is good at their job apparently).

About the miles... I'm only a member of M&B but the way I'd see it, if I were in more than one program is that you can't really compare the value of miles between the two. Just before both are named "miles" doesn't mean they have an equal value. After all, it's not like you can convert one to the other. There are probably differing sweet-spots in each program where the miles intrinsically become more 'valuable'. This is especially true as some airlines move towards awarding miles on a "spend" basis rather than distance flown. To make a fair comparison you'd have to work out how much you actually spent in earning the miles of the two respective programs.
