So for my own clarification - even though ITA Matrix prices out YQ charges for AC and UA tickets (looking into ORD-MUC), they won't actually be charged when you book M+B awards and I'll only be responsible for the miscellaneous airport/security fees?

Correct, there is no YQ for UA flights

Your best bet is just to call A3 and ask for availability every once in a while...
Thanks! I'll call again end of month. The return trip is confirmed but not the departure. Hopefully it will open new availability in the next few months.

NRT - CGK is 43.49 euro, C class, NH (includes 20 euro booking fee)

I believe not, as while UA won't charge you YQ they still charge all the other taxes. Picked a random date in July ATH-MUC-JFK and ita matrix gave me:

USDA APHIS Fee (XA)

€3.52
US Immigration Fee (XY)

€6.23
US Customs Fee (YC)

€4.89
German Passenger Service Charge (RA)

€17.81
UA YQ surcharge (YQ)

€191.00
US International Arrival Tax (US)

€15.83
Greece Airport Development Charge (GR)

€22.00
Greece Passenger Terminal Facilities Charge (WP)

€12.89
Greece Passenger Security Charge (WQ)

€5.00

So all and all you'll probably end up paying: 88.17+ 20 euro phone fee= 100.17

There will be YQ from ATH to MUC depending on your carrier. LH will have about 40 to 50 euro for YQ.

If you take the nonstop UA 124 EWR-ATH (instead of connecting somewhere from JFK), you would end up with the following taxes according to ITA matrix:

Code:
US International Departure Tax (US) $17.80
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) $5.60
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) $4.50
On top of that you would also pay the A3 20e phone booking fee. But if I understand correctly, you should be able to avoid the UA YQ of $428.00.

THANKS ALL-I called A3 JFK 45K AND $468 was the quote with phone fee- i have never seen open dates on EWR-ATH BIZ AT SAVER RATE -so it looks like no way to pay 45k and a yq under $100 --

I am new at working A3 rewards and big attraction for me was 45k rate but with $450 or so Yq -I do not see the value with A3 as I can use LH 52k and approx $ 300-400 Yq-OR U.A.miles 70K with less than $100 yq on LH,LX.TK

plus A3 domestic if use economy-- the miles required and tax makes no sense to book domestic award

I think A3 is one of best things to happen in Greece I find them excellent ( I remember the old OLYMPIC )- they are world standard n even above -

hope I am wrong and can find some value with A3

You can also use TK to get to ATH via IST, the YQ is not as bad, it is about 205,00 euros with booking fee included. Maybe you should consider this option if you do not want to use your UA miles?

Are the European carriers worth the YQ premium in Y or J? I'll probably stick with UA or AC economy on the way back, but since the flight over there will be a red-eye, figured I should favor the more comfortable option - which is a moot point in J I suppose because they all should be pretty comfortable!

IMO only J are worth it if there are YQ involve, unless it is a last minute Y ticket. I do think LH J is overprice with YQ, but I am ok with the LX and TK YQ for TATL J.

I want to book an award from Hamburg, Germany to Taipei, Taiwan in C.

Since ANA is never available I thought I would try out BR.
I checked that there is availability from AMS-BKK-TPE.
Since its only under one flight number would it count as one stopover?

The sector from HAM to AMS also has to have one stopover in FRA or MUC as there is no direct flight on *A. Would A3 allow this on an award?

If strictly only one stopover is allowed, the only option I have would be TK if I remember correctly.
Or does anyone have any suggestions towards such an itinerary.

There is also a non-stop BR flight available between IST and TPE (BR80), in addition, BR88 CDG-TPE is non-stop as well, however, you would have to start your journey from FRA or MUC to avoid a second transfer.

Just like to mention 3 things

1) Unfortunately, HAM-IST-TPE is your only option if you're commited to flying from HAM, as you can't book 4U connecting flights on an A3 award. Check if BR has their new J class for the dates your looking at on IST-TPE. If they do, this is your best option.

2) Availability on NH from Europe isn't that bad (though not stellar), if you book far in advance. Having said that you can't book HAM-TPE on NH as an A3 award because it involves a minimum of 2 stops (e.g. HAM-FRA/MUC/BRU-NRT/HND-TPE)

3) From HAM you could also consider to fly down to CDG on a cheap paid ticket and just book an award CDG-TPE with BR. Or fly/take the train down to DUS and fly DUS-NRT-TPE on NH. (If connecting times in Japan work out.) This might even be cheaper, as YQ on NH flights is very low (YQ on BR isn't too high either).

NH's J class is stellar, even though the food has gone downhill a little in recent times (though they are still light-years ahead of the likes of LH/BA, etc.). I don't have any first hand experience on BR, but their new J seems to be something like the CX seat, so it should be excellent too. Just make sure you're on a flight with the new J seat, as BR also flies A330s with a less desirable seat.

LIS-IST-GYD on TK in biz ow - 22k miles + 160€ in taxes [of these, YR=98€]. The taxes were the same for TP+LH flights as well even though YQ on revenue tickets is different. Not the best redemption of miles IMHO, but I wasn't very flexible with dates.
