Free snacks are back for United Economy

Hi everyone,

Today we’re announcing that we will re-introduce complimentary snacks to United Economy. Beginning in February 2016, customers on thousands of North America and Latin flights will begin receiving these snacks.

Based on departure time, the complimentary snack may vary. Those flying on flights departing before 9:45 a.m. will receive a morning stroopwafel – a Dutch caramel-filled waffle to pair with coffee, tea, or to enjoy on its own. Flights departing after 9:45 a.m. will offer packaged savory snacks, such as an Asian-style snack mix of rice crackers, sesame sticks and wasabi peas or a zesty-ranch mix of mini pretzel sticks, Cajun corn sticks and ranch soy nuts.

We understand the small details matter, and the return of free snacks is among a number of upgrades we’re making to improve your travel experience. For more, see our story on United Airtime.

Thanks,

-UA Insider

Thanks, this is great news.

And since this is coming straight from UA, I hope we can finally put to bed the notion that people buy strictly on price on a per transaction basis. If that were the case, UA would not be doing things like buying Illy coffee and reintroducing snacks.

I think the stroopwafel is actually brilliant. They're tasty, and the vast majority of Americans have likely never had one. It will make an association between that and UA, making the flight memorable for a few cents of spend on UA's part.

Kind of like how people associate B6 with blue chips.

Wow. Am I correct that UA is actually LEADING on this compared to other airlines? It has been YEARS since United led in anything positive. Great to hear!

Delta, Southwest, and JetBlue have offered free snacks in economy for years. United is simply joining the pack.
