There are four cash reload options listed on the Emerald site. The question is whether any of their outlets will accept either credit cards directly or debit cards purchased through a portal with a credit card.

Rapid Reload at WalMart
1. Take your H&R Block Emerald Prepaid MasterCard® and cash, payroll or government benefits check to any register at a participating Walmart (Rapid Reload not available in VT and WY).
2. If you have a check, the cashier will cash your check (Check cashing not available in NJ, NY, RI. Check cashing fees apply).
3. Swipe your Emerald Card and add all or part of your cash directly to it-load up to $1,000 as long as you don't exceed the card load limits. A service fee of $3.74 applies.

GreenDot Money Pak
1. Pick up a MoneyPak® from your participating neighborhood retailer.
2. Go to the register and add cash to the MoneyPak (up to $500 at most locations, up to $1,000 at Walmart). A service fee of up to $4.95 applies.

MoneyGram
1. Fill out the blue form or pick up the MoneyGram phone. Provide the following information:
Company Name: Emerald Card
Receive Code: 4941
Account Number: Your Emerald Card Number
2. Add the funds you want and the $3.95 fee.
3. Keep the reference number that confirms your transactions.

Western Union
1. Complete the gray Prepaid Services form and provide the agent with cash for your load amount and the $3.95 fee.
2. Save your receipt with your Money Transfer Control Number

To use your emerald for ach payments:
1. get your information from the direct deposits section of your emerald account
2. go to your bill (CC) and put that information in as your new payee
3. schedule your payment using that payee for the amount loaded to your emerald card. Posts next day and shows up as gone next day on emerald.

Please add your comments where necessary......

  • The maximum amount of cash value that you may load to your Card Account each month is $9,500.00.
  • The maximum number of times you may load your Card Account per month is ten (10).

  • The maximum cumulative amount that may be withdrawn from an ATM per day is $3,000.00 per card.
  • The maximum cumulative amount that may be withdrawn from a participating bank per day is the available balance of your Card Account.

Why not ACH it off to save yourself $1? I ACH'd $5k last month to my bank account.

Thanks. Didn't know about that. But wouldn't that risk shutdown issues? Loading 5k. And aching 5k.

I have the emerald card. But have not activate it since I don't know what to load it with.

If you want to dick around with the hassle that is Greendot and MPs, sure. Otherwise, except for those that want to bother with Rapid Reload, this card is now useless.

Plenty of people have not had issues with GD/MP. There are ways to avoid the loading problems.

With MP
1. always make sure the cards match those on the receipt before you leave the store
2. keep good records of receipts, loads, etc
3. be prepared to have to float some cash if money gets held up.

That being said, problems seem to be more likely to happen with MP than others. To each his own.

I am sorry you had a bad experience.
GD banned me after I did a lot in a short time. I expected it so hit it hard. MP has been fine.

VR. I'm still debating if I want to bother with RR to this card. I might just do MO instead. Would love to find some place that sells GD MP in the midwest, so far I've come up empty handed.

Not that much anymore. Probably just 3k per month now.
edit:

looking back I guess I am doing close to 5k.'

strangely, my usual rite aid had a new lady working today who said it is policy to take cash only for MPs since the policy changed. I politely checked out the rest of my stuff and moved 1 block to the next RA.

Just tried to load MP to this and got a message saying GD reserves the right to deny loading any card it deems suspicious or excessive. I've only done $4k in the past 6 weeks, only $1.5k of it with MP. They offered a refund but I don't want my money held for eternity and just sent the MPs to Paypal (have the debit card).

Somebody claim load HRB with VGC @ WM, anyone success?

Don't tell me you can use the VGC to buy MO then use MO to load, that's hassle with additional time/extra cost.

Well since I claimed to have done it and actually did do it, my WM must be an anomaly??? No. It is possible. My WM is just like your WM.

Great, thanks for confirming.

I will try later, although it might not justify the extra charge since you can get a 1K mo for $0.7. while you have to shell out 2x $3.74 to load the same 1K to the hrb.

There's no question that MO's are the cheaper route. There is the question of what is riskier.

For those that Are doing RR with Debit, are you charging the RR fee to a second card and having the cashier do a split 500+3.74, or are you doing RR for 496.26? I guess that if you are using Kate, the only option is 496.26 since there are no splits
