The guys outside might let you taste if you ask nicely.
We so need a "like" button for things like this :-)

It's the opposite of what you're probably used to -- the doors do close automatically, but with a longer delay. The close door button, with the kanji that O Sora posted, actually does close the doors immediately instead of with a delay.

By the way, the other button is quite close -- this is open:

The elevator buttons are often also marked with the international <> and >< for open and close for those of us who are hopeless at kanji.

No it's not just you. Mayo pizza anyone?

FWIW - I did try spaghetti with a mayo based sauce once. But didn't try anything like that again (perhaps I might acquire a taste for it - but it would definitely take me more than 2-3 weeks!). Robyn

Sometimes the open and close buttons are color-coded. Red for close and green for open. Or is it green to close the doors and make the elevator go, and red to stop the elevator and open the doors? Now i'm confused.

Green for open and red for close.

Sometimes there will be an extra button with the open/close ones to hold the doors open until another button is pressed. Obviously, pressing and holding the open button or call button outside the elevator will also keep the doors open. People tend to be polite in Japan and do this for other users.

Just found what looks like a local pharmacy and it sells beer and strong stuff as well. Amazing.

Btw, who nicked all the trash cans/rubbish bins before I flew in?

The close buttons for the handicapped passengers are often programmed with some-second delay.

I once carried a Coke bottle around Yokohama for about an hour before I found a trash can.

Thanks for keeping Japan clean.
Look for a canned beverage vending machine. Usually next to it you will find a bin for used cans and PET bottles.
