They have officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US courts with another filing due in the Bahamian courts this week. The ironic thing in all of this is they were unwilling to pay local contractors to build the resort as China convinced them their own people could do it substantially cheaper. The end result is the local contractors still have to go back and redo a lot of shoddy construction the Chinese workers (many who were prisoners) did.

Unless they get a significant line of credit, they will not be open this year, no matter what CS tells you because they owe about 60 million between the 3 contractors; so the work is in a stop and go phase.

Where do you see China Construction uses prisoners for this project
Anyway, looks like GH Baha Mar is not taking any reservations.

Trust me. A lot of them were Chinese prisoners. This was common knowledge among a select few in order for them to even be permitted into the country. They have since gone back.

Are you sure this wasn't the nickname given to them by the locals?

"We call them the prisoners," says Chrys Sturrup, a driver in Nassau. "We never see them at the beach or on the street."

No. Some were indeed prisoners.

This is from a immigration level, not a local level.

Interesting:

In undertaking the Chapter 11 process, Baha Mar at this time must cancel all existing guest reservations at the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel and suspend the acceptance of further reservations. Our priority is to complete construction and open the resort as quickly as possible.

If you have an upcoming reservation at Baha Mar with one of our partner hotels – the Grand Hyatt, Rosewood, or SLS – you should contact the hotel operator directly.

With Baha Mar suing it's general contractor to the tune of 192 million I think it's safe to say that they aren't going to be the ones finishing the job. So that means new people have to be hired. Although the main debtor is China so that will be interesting in bankruptcy proceedings. I still think any opening sooner than January 1st is not going to happen. Maybe we should start a opening date wiki league. Guess what the opening date is and you win a prize.

This article seems to suggest it won't open until 2017!

Hyatt's official written response to my email said to call this toll free number:

844-800-2242

When I called, expecting to speak to a human, all you hear is a recording saying no one is available to speak with. They say they have filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and all reservations have been canceled. I assume I will have to call HGP because this is unacceptable.

Grand Hyatt to open in the Bahamas

Anyone wanting to stay at this property needs to give up for the time being. I do not see this GH opening for a very long time (if ever), let alone under the Hyatt brand.

Are they going to still plan to compensate guests for this? Or is all of the compensation now over because they declared bankruptcy?

I have a 3 night honey moon booked for October which was booked months ago. Guess I am totally screwed now

Grand Hyatt to open in the Bahamas

Are you referring to Hyatt taking a deposit? If they took a deposit they will refund it. They never charged a deposit on my reservations. Now if it's Baha mar we are talking about then I'm not sure if you'll get your money back.

I stand corrected. I was confused with another reservation I have at Aria that charged me the first night.
