It might, but it doesn't fix the maintenance issues/costs. Just makes flying them into the ground a bit more financially prudent.

Anyone know the tail number of the plane being spared for a while? I thought only 3 birds listed in the wiki were sent to the desert last year.
Looks like DL has been doing some military charters with some of the 747s, so perhaps they're getting more of that business. N670US is currently in Ontario, CA from a charter.
Also is N661US going to get gogo? Its the only 747 without it.

FYI, looks like they loaded up the 747s on the ATL>HNL route last night and I'm finding RTs from NYC in business for around 2K. 17K MQMs, upper deck for 10 hrs there and back - not a bad way to ride that plane, rack up some mqms, and go to hawaii this summer.

I was on 6301 from NRT -> MSP on 2/23. It was a pleasant surprise since it was supposed to be a 777.
As soon as I got to the gate and realized DL had swapped equipment, I traded my seat for the last available spot upstairs.

Not sure if anyone caught this on the yearly earning's call but Richard Anderson mentioned an additional four 747s will be retired before year's end. With only 8 left I imagine only DTW-NRT-MNL, DTW-ICN, and DTW-PVG will be operating next year as Delta continues to consolidate 747 flying as they continue to wind down the fleet. Maintenance must be a real price killer in addition to how badly Yen devaluation has hit Delta. I believe the 4 242 ton A333s will partially replace these retired aircraft. With Delta dumping this aircraft as soon as they can without gutting non-Asia interport flying, the A350-900s arriving in 2017 will act more as a growth aircraft than what the 242 ton A333s were supposed to be. Any idea of the delivery schedule for the A350-900?

Just an aside: on my surprise 747 flight from NRT to MSP a few days ago, I met a DL 747 pilot deadheading home for some family leave.
He told me that the "retired" 747s could be recalled and provisioned within 36hrs. So it isn't a deep, deep mothballing. On a previous 747 flight on same route, I was talking to another pilot flying home as a passenger. He said one of the factors of retiring the 747 at least from the Asian routes was the landing cost at NRT.
I have no idea if this is true, just passing along for your consideration.

Sadly, the only DL 744's I've been on were back when they were painted silver and red, and I was in the back of the bus. Still a fun flight, though at this point it's looking like I might not make it on to a DL 744 before they're all retired. At least I got to hit the UD on one of the refurb'd KL 747s.

My travel has slacked off, so I had not been following Delta's equipment moves on TA routes. Imagine my surprise when I booked a June trip that includes a leg from ATL to AMS and found the 744! I thought I had flown it for the last time a couple of years ago on a TP route. Barring any changes, I'll be upstairs on 6/13 and again on 6/20. This business trip suddenly looks a lot better!

DL's 74s
Last week I took a KE 74 from KUL to ICN and then a DL 74 from ICN to DTW. What a world of difference. The KE was wonderful and clean, clean, clean with water for hand washing in the restrooms what was hand-motion activated. The DL flight was just OK, but the aircraft was tired inside and one of the restrooms had white caulk around the toilet flusher handle.
DL must do more to get my business; I know others feel this way, also.

The DL 74s are OK, but not against Asian carriers such as KE. This is, in part, a follow-on to the discussion of U.S. carriers like DL going head-to-head with Asian carriers and the Gulfies.

Woohie, see a 747 showing up for a upcomming AMS-ATL leg . Looking for seats on the lower deck (3A-5A or 10A-12A).
Being the complete DL 747 noobie here i see the galley situated between row 6 and 9. Are meal orders taken from front to back by section? Or do the FA's start at row 1 and work their way to row 13? or back to front as on the 330's?

DL 747 fleet operation
Was pulling into ATL south parking today and came around the bend to be greeted by a beautiful DL 744 waiting to turn on to 9L. I'm guessing it was the AMS flight.
If I weren't running late for my own flight, I would have pulled over to take some pics. Would have been great to be in the cell phone lot right at that moment.

B747 to Europe this month?
I searched for a thread on this topic, but since the genius that programmed the search engine sees it fit to strip "747" from my search keywords, I couldn't tell if it's been addressed.
I played around with booking a European trip in late April and saw a B747 listed as a/c for a DTW-AMS trip. I thought it was a fluky repositioning or maintenance thing, but then my return trip CDG-DTW is also showing a B747. Fun for me, but does anyone know why these birds are showing up on TATL now?
