I'm going to wait another 6-8 hours before pulling the plug, but it really looks like I'm going to have to cancel out of concern for what could happen to my home while I'm away. I wish that I could delay the decision longer, but Delta imposes its own 72-hour cancellation deadline that is fast approaching.
If you do have to cancel and things improve- let us know and we'll keep track to see if any space opens up on other airlines for awards if things hold ok.

We live right on the coast in PB County and this one is for us not to worry. The most we will get will be Tropical Storm winds on the downside of the eye. This will cause us to get lots and lots of rain but even tho we are only at 10' of elevation, our place drains nicely right into the Intercoastal.
Our biggest decision will be whether we actually need to bring in the balcony furniture.

My place is at 8' elevation and about 12 miles inland, but drainage is a real problem. In 2012, we were begging the South Florida Water Management folks to please open their gates and let some water flow into the Everglades. I had water almost to my front door.

The 11 am weather update shows Erika moving closer to the Florida coast on Monday. I'm just too uncomfortable to leave home with the storm on its way here. So I have cancelled my flights and hotel reservations. I also PayPalled the money for Dutch Harbor to jackal.
I hope that everyone has a great time in Alaska, and I'm sorry that I won't be there, too!

OK, before I hit the sack for the night--
A couple of updates have been posted.
Post #2 now contains the schedule of events. A few things are still being finalized.
Post #4 now contains an overview of expected costs for transportation and various events. This will be updated a bit soon with further details, but this should give you an idea of some of the things to plan for.
Post #9 has been updated with some information about the Dutch Harbor barbecue and weather.
Please bring lots of layers. It could be sunny and 70 degrees in Dutch (as it was yesterday, to the utter shock and delight of the locals), or it could--and actually is very much more likely to--be cold, windy, rainy, and in the 50s or even 40s. Bring several thin layers that you can easily add or shed as the weather changes. Prepare for rain and make sure you have an outer layer of rain gear available. One guide for how to dress in layers is here, courtesy of REI. We will be having some outdoor events and excursions. We cannot stress this enough: if you do not prepare, you WILL be cold, and you will likely find the trip miserable instead of magical.
Last, and very important: Now that the schedule is set, I need precise counts of who will be involved in each activity.
Please revisit the wiki and add yourself to the specific events you wish to participate in. There are some new events listed. Please do this ASAP (ideally, by evening 8/28) as I need to finalize the rental car situation soon and need to know how many people to plan for. I do very much appreciate your timely cooperation with this request.
I will be available to answer questions tomorrow, so please post or PM. Some times may be slightly flexible, so if you are considering declining to join in an event because the time doesn't quite work for you, please post or PM and I will see what adjustments might be made so as to maximize the opportunity for everyone to participate.
Thanks so much, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing you all!
