Going, Going... Almost Gone!
Those of you who are regulars into YYZ may have noticed the slow dismantling of the old Canadian hanger and ops centre at the edge of the airport by 427N. Of course, A FlyGirl will also remember it more fondly as the original Wardair overhaul base.
While most peoples' attentions have been focused on that mass of steel and concrete on the entry to T1 and T2, there has certainly been a lot of new building at the centre of the airport, with an entire new cargo centre and other structures. And I am sure I landed on a new N/S runway parallel to the main one a few weeks back.

Ah Shareholder you are so right. I've walked it's floor many times. It was in that hanger I learned of Canadian's purchase of Wardair, attended the unveiling ceremony of the transitional AC livery, and heard other speeches and presentations delivered over time by all three airlines. Following 9/11 I drove past it day after day and watched the progress of it's dismantling and felt a tug on the old heartstrings every time.
Another silent but visable show of progress towards the new runway at yyz is the empty Novatel Hotel on Carlingview. It will probably be coming down soon too.
The runway you landed on is the newest and to the best of my knowledge can only be used for landings due to a noise restriction agreement with residents along it's flight path. I had the priveledge of operating the inaugural CAIL flight in the ceremony to open that runway. It was 20 minutes long. AC won the coin toss to takeoff first but we had Collenette on board. Which one of us do you feel was the luckier?

Shareholder, you probably landed on runway 33L-15R, which was completed about a year ago (correct me if I'm wrong on this, A FlyGirl), and which parallels 33R-15L. I noticed that they only seem to use these two north-south runways on extremely windy days, or if the cross-winds on the east-west runways is too high, but didn't know about the noise restrictions.
A FlyGirl, you mentioned a new runway on the south end of YYZ. Is that in addition to 24L-6R, or is it to replace that runway? I too drive by the old Canadian hanger on my way to and from work each day. What, if anything, are they going to put up on all that land after it's torn down?

Actually Blackjack I think the runway was opened officially in Nov 98. I remember the time period because I was off due to a car accident (three years ago today actually) and operated this flight as my first one back to work.
The hanger and Novotel buildings are coming down for the sake of a new runway. Both buildings are in the way of a new proposed flight path.

I'll add a few points:
I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the old Canadian hangar is being dismantled for erection elsewhere--it's not being scrapped.
The new N/S parallel runway is 33L/15R and is used primarily for landings. I've taken off on it, so it must be done under specific circumstances. The N/S runways are used when the winds are strong, or when there might be construction or maintenance on either E/W runway. If there are storm cells to the east or west of the airfield, then also will the N/S runways be used.
The E/W runways used to be known as 06L/24R (the northern one) and 24L/06R (the southern one by the 401). But 06L/24R became 05L/23R (or maybe it's just 05/23 for now), and 24L/06R was renamed 06L/24R. The new runway under construction will be 24L/06R. It will run parallel (of course) to the existing runway, to its south. As I understand things, since the separation between the two southern runways won't be great, simultaneous operations won't be allowed. However, with one designated for takeoffs and the other for landings, they can squeeze more aircraft movements in.
The location of 24L/06R requires the dismantling of the Canadian hangar and the demolition of the Novotel hotel on Renforth (I think the Moore's warehouse store is safe for the time being).
There are provisions for a runway 23L/05R to be built just south of 05L/23R, but that's years away.

While improvements must be made there is a limit. It would be unforgivable to evict the only source of $100 extra tall suits.
The "Traveller" model wears like steel and never needs ironing. I once wore the same "Traveller" across the Atlantic and for 5 days in Europe and back looking well pressed the whole time.
Word to the wise: Only the additional yellow tags which are hand lettered ($100)and in addition to the normal 'compare' and price labels are great deals. The rest can be had at any Moore's store.
For those who are vertically challenged... best selection September and February.

Note to exAC...
"The Traveller" should be available at any Moores store. The price will be many times the price of their clearance location.
BTW This model has many zippered pockets both inside and out to keep things from wandering away.
