Powdery substance found on ACR plane

Plane stopped at Pearson airport after powdery substance found in cargo hold

TORONTO (CP) - Authorities stopped a plane at Pearson International Airport on Sunday after baggage handlers found a white powdery substance in the jet's cargo hold. "As a standard procedure, authorities were notified," said Air Canada Regional spokeswoman Debra Williams.

The Air Canada Regional Airlines plane was to fly from Toronto to Fredericton with 44 passengers and four crew on board. Similar incidents have been numerous in recent days, following confirmed news of anthrax cases in the U.S. Others have turned out to be false alarms.

On Saturday, harmless spray from a fire extinguisher set off an anthrax scare at a Toronto hospital.

Meanwhile, tests were being done on the substance found in the forward cargo hold of the Air Canada Regional plane. Results were expected by Monday afternoon.

Police played down the incident.

"We don't think it's anything," said Peel Regional police Const. Heather Andrews. Still, she added, "Better safe than sorry."

She said the substance wasn't in any type of container and was found spilled loosely on the floor.

The plane's passengers were taken off the airliner and moved to another jet, which was en route to Fredericton by early Sunday afternoon.
