Passport Agency Appointments (same day expedited service)
Appointments for same-day expedited service often go quickly. It is best that you schedule your appointment with the passport agency exactly 14 days before your trip. You will want to call the passport number before the center opens at 8am EST as they will have just opened up one day (14 days out) of appointments at all agencies. Appointment times start at 8am. It is important that you have enough buffer in your travel schedule. For example, if you make an appointment for a new passport at 11am and your time of travel is at 2pm, there will not be enough time for you to get your passport. If you book the 8am slot you may have to wait until the end of the business day to get your new passport or it may only be a few hours.
You will want to have your date of travel, time of travel, your flight itinerary number, name of destination, full name of applicant, and applicant's birth city, and the zip code of where you live (to help them find the closest available center with open slots). Use the following steps to increase your chances of success to booking an appointment as they can go very quickly:

Known office locator numbers (not complete)
Note: The office code (first two digits of your application locator number returned by Passport Status) is the office reviewing your documents and approving your application. It isn't necessarily the address you mailed the forms to (always Irving or Philadelphia for renewals) nor the facility where the book is physically printed and mailed (often Tucson or Hot Springs).

The passport books are printed in fewer locations, often Hot Springs and Tucson, and may not correspond to the agency where the processing steps occurred. - At 7:55 am call the passport number 877-487-2778 (This have to be exactly 14 days before your plane ticket or less. If less, it will get harder to find an appointment)
- Click 1 (For English)
- Click 2 (New Passport)
- Continue to Click 7 to repeat, and keep doing this while watching your watch or using Time.gov to get the exact time down to the second.
- When your it hits exactly 8:00 am Click 2 (for traveling within 14 days option)
- There will be a delay of 3-4 second and you will wait for the next available agent. If you are very lucky, you will be put straight through to an agent. You may be waiting few minutes or maybe as long as 15-20 minutes.
- If you did not click 1 exactly at 8 am, you may have to wait for more than an hour and half

Apparently, I'm going against the grain, because I actually prefer the ePassport and was very happy to receive that version. The next generation passport biodata page is rather too purple for my liking, and I'm a little skeptical of polycarbonate biodata pages after a bad experience with an early Norwegian passport employing that technology. (That said, Norway's passport problems were due to a design flaw that has since been corrected. I have no reason to believe US next-gen passports suffer from the same flaw.)

Well, this day just keeps getting better. I just tried to update my Global Entry with my brand new Passport I received today----and it popped up that it did not recognize that Passport.
Does it usually take a few days before it will work??

The person that showed me their new style Passport got their's through Philadelphia----just like I dod
But that was their first Passport ever and was regular size, whereas mine was a renewal, expedited, and the larger size
Don't know if that made the difference or not. Who knows with the government.

Let me be a bit childish here. I think I will apply for a new Passport next year this time so that I can hopefully get the new style Passport.
Yes, that's silly I know. But I really do want one.

Child passport renewal
My timeline for a recent passport application. Hopefully this is encouraging to others.
(Child under 16 age passport renewal. 26 days start to finish time. Standard/routine processing, no rush, no expedited.).
- Appointment Sep 07, 2021 at USPS Cupertino, CA
- USPS $35 check cashed Sept 10, 2021
- Application Status "in process" Sep 10, 2021(Application# 57xxxxxxx, processing in San Francisco)
- Passport fees $80 check cashed Sep 13, 2021
- Application status "Approved" on Sep 30, 2021.
- Passport received via USPS Oct 03, 2021.
- Now waiting for original birth certificate and old passport to be returned, which may take another few weeks
My wife's passport which showed as "in process" since 9/7/21 though is still showing no changes. That passport renewal is being processed out of New Orleans based on first 2 digit of application number.

New applicant, minor/child, standard processing
Data point for: New Passport applicant, Minor, Standard/Non-Expedited processing.
8/15: Stayed up until midnight to schedule an appointment at local USPS acceptance facility in Seattle area. Selected one for 4 weeks out. Plenty of time slots. I highly recommend this, or waking up at early if you have a specific site/date/time in mind.
9/13: Application for Minor at local USPS Acceptance Facility. We arrived at the USPS facility with our little applicant (toddler) 15 minutes early. Employee told us to hang outside for another 10 minutes then come back in. We had the application pre-filled using the form filler. Had the passport photo taken on site. Appointment took about 10 minutes. Most of the time was spent trying to corral toddler to look directly at the camera
9/16: Application received with Locator Number #53.
10/2: I haphazardly checked for updates. It was approved and said I would receive it on or around 10/10. USPS Dashboard tracker said it was coming from Little Rock, Arkansas.
10/4: Passport received. Not a next gen passport. Now waiting for birth certificate doc.
10/15: Birth cert received.
A few things to note:

A few things to note:
- Applicant/toddler has valid NEXUS pass so it could have affected how quickly his application was approved.
- I subscribed to the US Passport Status email update list, but never received any updates. So my date(s) may be slightly off as I checked the site on a random 1-2x/weekly basis.

Girlfriend had to get passport renewal for a trip in Dec. We were worried until I saw people in thread getting new passport within 5 weeks (in mid Sept,). I guess she probably could have got it in time with regular processing.
Here's here timeline. Send to Philadelphia from Michigan
,
9/16 mailed Priority 2 day mail
9/18 Delivery confirmation dated
9/21 check cashed
9/29 Officially received according to passport status check rush return said 10/7 but arrived today 10/5. Just passport, not passport card.

I applied for routine service - sent it in early July.
8/2 - in the system
8/3 - check cashes
9/7 - requested expedited service via email with cc info - never charged and apparently my request to expedite was declined.
And no movement since. It is a 68 code.
I am traveling on 10/18, so I called for an urgent appointment. I now have to fly from CLT-DTW to go to my appointment, since there were no openings in ATL, DC, or PHL. Also my appointment is the morning of 10/18, so after all this I may end up missing my flight. Very frustrating. I'm hoping for the regular process to finally go through. I feel better after reading about some of the faster times - surely they'll get to mine soon!!!

I can confirm that in the course of about 6 hours today he was naturalized as a US citizen, went to his appointment at the passport office with the completed application, photos, and all require documentation, and he is currently headed home with new passport in hand!
9/27/21: Made appointment at the US passport office for the day of his naturalization ceremony. While appointments can be scheduled 14 days in advance, we did not have that much advanced notice, we only found out about his ceremony 11 days before it was scheduled to occur, and since we learned about it on a weekend we were only able to make an appointment 9 days in advance.
10/6/21: naturalization ceremony and passport appointment.
10/7/21: traveling to Canada for the first time in almost 2 years.

I wonder if I'm going to hit the record for passport delays. Standard service, no rush, we don't have any international travel plans until Feb.
7/22/2021: Appointment at USPS for my two underage kids to renew their passports
8/06/2021: Passport "received" according to US Passport website (42 locator - New Orleans)
crickets....
