JFK-LAX p.s. Business class 7 a.m. flight, 24-Oct-2006

Predeparture drinks: water, orange juice. No bubbly

Featured Cocktails
Bellini:
Lots of places serve this famous drink, but few use the correct ingredients - light sparkling wine and white peach puree. But that's exactly what we've done, so give this refresher a try!
Kir Royale:
The Kir Royale is a contemporary cocktail mixing Cassis with Champagne for a delightfully rich and effeverscent drink.

To Begin
Fresh from the bakery
A selection of Danish, croissants and bagels with buter, cream cheese and fruit preserves

Main Course
Spinach frittata with Hollandaise sauce
Sauted turkey sausage, Canadian bacon, silver dollar potato pancakes and asparagus spears with fresh seasonal fruit

Fresh seasonal fruit platter
For the lighter appetite, we offer a variety of fresh seasonal fruit with cereal

Prior to Arrival
Lemon pepper seasoned breast of chicken
Stone ground mustard mayonnaise and fresh fruit

Cheese plate with fresh fruit
Swiss Gruyere, Double Gloucester, New York Cheddar

Chocolate chip cookies

Sparkling Wine
Domaine Chandon Blanc de Noir NV California

White Wine
Labour-Roi 2004 Chablis (Chardonnay)
Domaine Vincent Sauvestre 2004 Chablis (Chardonnay)
Van Loveren Chardonnay 2005 Robertson
Van Loveren Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Robertson

Red Wine
E. Guigal 2001 Ctes du Rhne
Tauras Roble Tempranillo 2003 Toro
Lockwood Merlot 2002 Monterey
Powers Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 Columbia Valley

No hot nuts served on this flight. The chicken looked very uninspiring, so I didn't sample it myself - just stayed with the cheese and fruit plate. Since it was an early morning flight, I had a couple of the cocktails, but none of the wines.

The meal was spoiled a little by the masticating FA, but otherwise was standard, not bad, not exceptional service.

UA 301, IAD-DEN, B777 Breakfast

International 777

Pre-departure beverages: Water or orange juice

Breakfast choice of three-cheese omlette with breakfast meats and hash browns or seasonal fruit with yogurt

Bread basket feature: Onion bagels, croissant, or cheese danish

Prior to arrival: Beverage service with premium snack mix

The crew did an excellent job with the pacing of the meal service, despite having to sit down three times due to heavy chop and light turbulence.

Post UA902 DEN-IAD Monday 10/23, 10:30ish Lunch

On 3-class 777 in Business:

No pre-departure beverage service (flight was oversold, there was a lot going on at the gate and things were pretty rushed.. so I don't really blame them)

After takeoff: Meal choices taken in order of status, followed by a full beverage and hot nut service:

- Turkey and Melted Cheese Sandwich (came in a dish, and most ate it with a fork and knife)
- or -
- Shrip Salad with ginger or ceasar dressing

Trays and dishes were collected, then a little later warm cookies were served with tea and coffee.

Entire meal was very good, and service was superb! ^

IAD-LAX Dinner October

5h50 p.m. departure on a 3-class B777. No printed menus handed out, the service included:

Nuts
Salad
Main course: Choice of "Steak" or "Lasagne"
Caramel/Chocolate Cheese cake

I decided to have the steak, which looked like a small filet with some brown sauce, a few spears of asparagus and a few bland slices of potatoes. The meat was very well-done (rock-hard), the overall meal rather small. My seat neighbour had the lasagne. It was larger and had some veggies as a side. It seemed to be the better choice.

The cheese cake was quite tasty & enjoyable.

Breakfast

Ham, Egg, Veggies/potatos. Everything was decent except for the ham, which was dry and overcooked. 3.5/5 stars for me.

I had the Obento, which wasn't fantastic. The shrimp was my favorite, but the beef negima-yaki had a sort of processed-meat flavor and was quite greasy. The main course of salmon had that mushy, soupy consistency I don't like. The chocolate cheesecake was outstanding again, super-rich and delicious. I drank quite a lot of sake and slept soundly. I tried the quiche again and thought it was OK; it was better with the sauce on the side than on top as it was served SFO-HKG.

Forgot to mention that the pre-boarding sparkling wine was being served on the beverage cart instead of the Pol Roger. One reason I had the sake instead.

I was pleased to see a November menu even though it was still October. I decided to try the Obento again since it promised snapper, which I prefer to salmon. When the food arrived it was clear that it was still the October Obento, which I had not liked all that much. The beef was still greasy and the salmon still soupy. I would have liked a "heads up" from the crew but they were not all that sharp. On the plus side the dessert was still the chocolate cheesecake, which I still loved.

The pre-arrival snack was a sort of hybrid. The quiche was gone, replaced by the puff pastry, which was pretty good. It looked like a cinnamon roll, actually, and was nicely flavored with the Asiago cheese. The ham, zucchini and pomodoro sauce weren't present, though. Insted it was the Polish sausage, asparagus and Hollandaise sauce from October. Oh, well.

And again, the pre-boarding sparkling wine was on the beverage cart. Is this a new cost-cutting measure, I wonder. I wanted Champagne so I asked the F/A if I could have what was on the menu. A bottle of Pol Roger appeared from inside the cart!

This was my low-fat meal as well and I enjoyed it. The normal offerings were a cold Thai chicken breast sala dand fruit cobbler or a pork ciabatta sandwich, both with a warm cookie.

Indianboy821 and I were among the last to board the completely full C cabin. We settled down in 6CD, and were offered pre-departure OJ or water within a minute. Captain came on within a few minutes to announce that our flight time would be 5hr4min.

After pushback, drink orders were taken, and delivered promptly.

We had pre-ordered special meals for this flight. We took one low fat meal, as described by BlissWorld as well as one low calorie meal.

To copy BlissWorld's words, the low fat meal consisted of:
Chilled Rosemary Chicken Breast
accompanied by:
orzo salad (sweet corn, grilled onions and mushrooms)
a small roll with spread, not butter
fruit plate (kiwi, pineapple, grapes, and strawberry)
4 snackwell chocolate cookies (like oreos with chocolate cream filling)

Indianboy said it was quite tasty.

The low calorie meal, on the other hand, was not quite as good. It consisted of a couscous type main course, with zucchini and salsa. It came with a side of fruit, a roll, and a cookie.

The FA's came around with the bread basket, which is not pictured above.

Overall, a very good crew as usual on PS, with professional and friendly service.

Flight Attendant's were working hard reviewing the safety manual most of the flight, with our safety being their primary concern. (sorry, I really could not resist)

Verdict: the low fat meal is the way to go!

I had the Asian choice, which was delicious. The crew was Singapore-based and very friendly, addressing passengers by name.

The pre-arrival snack was less impressive - I found the beef to be tough-ish and without much taste. I guess the crew felt the same: waiting for the lavatory I smelled something cooking - a flight attendant pulled some of the beef out of the oven as it sizzled and smoked - "Beef jerky!" she said.

Transcon Hindu Vegetarian Dinner

UA 947 IAD-LAX

I ordered a Hindu Vegetarian dinner; it consisted of small, plain salad of romaine, tomato and lemon slices with a lemon vinagrette dressing. The main course was a very mild vegetable curry over basmati rice, with three small naan bread patties. Desert was a small portion of Halwa, an Indian kind of lemon bar with coconut, it seems. I had the white wine (did not see the label) with this meal and it was fine.

Regular offerings was the beef tenderloin in encounted over Labor Day and a cheese pasta dish with grilled veggies.

Great service on this flight - I gave out two GTEM certs to the flight attendents in my cabin.

November Transcon Business Class (IAD-SEA)

Salad
Lettuce and carrots served with Ranch Dressing

Beef Tenderloin
Served with three hash-browned potatoe patties and green beans.

Chicken Breast stuffed with vegatables
Served with roasted potatoes and asparagus spears

Pasta
Cheese pasta with grilled vegatables

Key lime cheesecake served for dessert.

Wines were Canyon Creek Red and White. The red was surprisingly drinkable.

My only "beef" was the entire meal (sans dessert) was served at once, so I didn't touch my salad since I wanted to eat the entree before it got cold. The steak was rare trending to medium (very pink) and quite tender for the most part, though my plastic knife was a bit dull so it took some effort to cut.
