When Cleared: upgraded at gate

I was not on the upgrade list at the time that I went to the gate. I was on a combined UA\CO ticket with my in-bound to ORD on CO.

fyi: CO UDU for 2010 0 for 5 (as Platinum!)

Agree. It's reporting bias, and these surveys will never accurately reflect what's happening for 1P/2Ps, as there are far fewer of them represented on FT, relative to 1Ks, and the minority of 2Ps who do get upgraded are far more likely to report, than the masses that fail. The 1K data, however, is useful, and with time, we should get a pretty good handle on which routes we have a better or worse shot at successfully upgrading.

I was 8th on the list when I arrived to board at the gate. I am guessing the ORD-SNA Monday and Friday flights are going to be very tough even for a 1K.

I'm 0 for 1 so far:

DEN - DTW (UA 7289)
10:25 am departure (in theory, actually went about 45 min late) today
Regional jet with ex plus
Fare class W
Did not clear (had requested in advance with 500s awhile back). Called 1K line on day before flight, only one remaining seat; still waitlisted. Ended up #2 out of 18 awaiting upgrade; none of us got it.

It looks like we have a higher failure rate... but the greatest percentage of the overall upgrades are given to 1Ks too.

DEN-MIA
Monday 3/22/10
UA 266 10:41 am
757/2

Fare Class: Q

Did not clear.
Was #4 on PA waitlist at gate. Nobody cleared at gate.

Requested UG using CR-1 at booking on 3/1/10.
But did get a better E+ seat at check in counter.
But my return MIA-DEN on 3/24 cleared at time of booking on 3/1/10.

Cleared at gate

3-hr delay (inbound aircraft late, don't know why), flight was empty as a lot of people were probably not boarded since they'd misconnect in SFO. I did request the upgrade in advance of the 19th, don't know if that affected it.

I'm going on the books with perhaps a record of the first GS not to clear under UDU. It shocked me but knocked me back down to size.

Elite Status:GS

When Cleared: Did not Clear. Was teased to the podium about 2 available seats but the GA quickly backtracked. Seemed kind of suspicious to me. As a quick aside, do deadheading pilots get higher upgrade priority than elites (or are otherwise directly booked into F)? I had a pair on each of my flights, including this one that didn't clear.

UA just doesn't want you GS folks to get *too* used to free upgrades...so you keep buying those full fare F and C tickets

On my flight last night, there was an off-duty FA in F (in uniform). Maybe they do get priority?

This is great since I have SFO-BOS waitlisted under SWU (PVG-SFO cleared)

Will non-status pax waitlisted with CR1 have higher priority over 1K under UDU?

When Cleared: at the gate - 1 seat left on the list, and i got it.

This is going to be the biggest change for me with UDU. I had a policy with e-500s to never waste them on a flight less than 1000 miles. Looks like SFO-DEN flights I'll be riding in F most of the time now. Nice.
