Can you get an earlier YYZ-IAD flight?

YYZ is still a mess from restarting after Covid, and flights departing from there can be very late.

How would I go about getting an earlier YYZ-IAD flight? We are flying Economy K fare class. Do I just call UA Reservations and tell them my concerns of misconnecting and request to be ticketed an earlier YYZ-IAD flight.
Or should we head to the airport early on the day of departure and ask UA or AC if we can get issued a boarding pass for the earlier flight?

If you're concerned about the connection, call UA and tell them. Ask if the next earlier flight can be ticketed if that's what you want.

UA will allow standby on the day of travel. Show up before the previous UA-operated flight and ask to be put on the standby list.

While this is a perfectly valid approach, it trying to change it in advance will likely lead to a fare difference being collected, whereas standby will be free.

I had a couple of instances where I called UA and said my connection looked a bit dicey. The response in both was “Yes, let’s get you booked on the earlier flight.” Fare was not discussed.

That’s SOP on the day of travel. It is SOP after a schedule change makes a connection tighter. It is very much not SOP in other cases. That’s not to say that it might not work, but there’s no policy to account for it, and it’s breaking quite a few rules.

After, uhh, 40? years of planning, Metro is finally going to open at IAD in 2 weeks. Tuesday, 15 November.

It's roughly 20 mins from the station to the TK lounge with Pre-check

Should we held a parade from the station to the front of the Main Terminal (not TK lounge)? 😄😄

I haven't been following this at all. Is this a direct connection into the prime DC area?

It's an extension of the existing Silver line, so yes.

Direct is a generous term, but single train service to prime DC is here. It will just be slow due to all the stops. Supposedly 52 minutes from IAD to Metro Center.

You are correct direct is generous. For folks not from DC area, like the London Underground map, the DC Metro map is more than a bit deceptive. The trip from Reston Wiehle (the current Silver line terminus) through the next few stops is a bit of a winding trip through Tyson's Corner region of Northern VA. before it becomes more direct.

That being said still convenient and with traffic as it can be not an unreasonable trip time. And much more reasonable than a taxi / uber fare.

(And as an aside I much prefer the AF lounge as a Priority Pass lounge to TK...)

I read direct as in one train without the need to transfer.

Good point. Depends on where you are going - but yes getting downtown is no transfer. But if you are for example heading to Union Station or Dupont Circle it is a change. As well for some areas like Georgetown the metro does not go there....

Thanks for posting that. Very straightforward then, single train direct into main DC area.
And about the same amount of time to get from downtown Chicago out to ORD.

Got it, thanks.
And yes, last time I took an Uber, it was quite expensive. So this is a big step forward!
