This is likely the best thread to post.
IAD FRA IST MNL today in J. Due to the potential weather, a relative dropped me off quite early (noon) for my 10 PM to FRA. The 'Premier Access' personnel, very pleasant, were quite insistent on doing everything at the kiosk rather than at the Polaris desk on the other side of the check-in area. Lots of document checks for Philippines. She insisted on seeing my physical vax card rather than the pic on my phone. Fine. She had to get her colleague to review my Philippines entry permission slip. Got to the checked bags portion. Errored out. International checked bags must not be checked-in more than 4 hours before the flight. At first I thought that UA didn't want me hanging out at the Polaris lounge for 9 hours. Discussion with two other colleagues. She did get my boarding passes printed and told me that I could go to the Polaris desk and see if my bags could be dropped. (So, if I didn't have bags, I could have kept going.) The Polaris rep, also very pleasant, had a bunch of keyboarding and finally bag tags printed. He didn't tell me (and I should have asked) if he was making an exception for me.
I know that many foreign airlines won't allow check-in (bag check) until 3 or 4 hours prior to the flight. But I can't recall that being an issue with UA, whether IAD, DEN, or IAH, in the past.
FYI...

For flights within the U.S., as well as most international flights, baggage will generally not be accepted for check-in more than four hours before a scheduled flight departure, although this policy varies by airport and daily check-in counter hours.

I mean, they probably don't, but that's not the reason for the policy. The real reason is that they don't want bags sitting around in the baggage room for 9 hours. (Also, they probably realize that the chances of a baggage incident go up with time).

Connecting at IAD - domestic to international
Flying in from Nashville to IAD, connecting to a flight to Frankfurt (and then Norway). I have 1 hour and 19 minutes (between around 4pm and 5pm) and it's the Sunday after Thanksgiving (2023). I realize I won't have much if any time in the Polaris Lounge - but do you think that's enough time? Haven't been to IAD in forever and do want to grab a sandwich for the flight rather than eat on the plane. Wasn't really concerned until I realized it's winter and it's a busy travel day - AND I have a cruise at the other end of the flight that I can't miss. (Flying in a day early but . . . . )
Should I call and see if United will let me fly to IAD earlier or am I being overly cautious???
Thanks!
(I didn't see a thread re: connecting in IAD)

I would usually aim for at least 2 hour layover for an international connection. Are you connecting to the 5p or 10p flight? If 5p and you're fine taking a bit of risk, you could use 10p (or LH) as a backstop.
Given booking is for Nov, there will be schedule changes between now and then (for BNA-IAD), so if you are seeing a large fare difference to change earlier, I would wait and try to get free change after they settle the flight timings.

I would have taken the earlier direct flight to IAD. I know that is a long layover, but there is a Polaris lounge there.

Thanks for the link. I did search "Connecting in IAD" although it consistently changed it to iAd with Ad bolded. The earlier BNA - IAD flight wasn't an option when I booked it BUT I just called and explained my issue. The nice man, named Mark, said he got an "error" message when trying to change it. That there was probably a fare change and he would get back to me.
There was a fare change, he explained, 5 minutes later.
$2.80!!!
Yay! It's going to be a hellishly long day but the IAD Polaris lounge sounds very nice and if there is an issue with the 8:30 am flight ex Nashville I at least have a fall back. Would UA send me to LH? I mean, do they do interline (?) anymore? I remember when it was the norm. Yes, I am on #989. Could wait for a time change by United but for $2.80, it was a no brainer. I have nearly 3 hours in Frankfurt. At least I will get my money's worth at IAD . . .THANKS!
PS. Do they often exchange for an RJ??? I HATE THOSE LITTLE PLANES!!

My IAD go-to for sandwiches to take on the airplane is Potbelly. It's around gate D11 (or so). Ask them to use an extra sheet of the wax paper. Makes it easier to keep everything neat when eating it in a confined space as that extra layover does get any of the liquids on it.

IAD denizen here.
I think your connect time -although "legal" - is too tight. The issue isn't so much the traverse time from arrival gate to departure gate (worse case thats say 20 mins) but any hiccups in your inbound into IAD and things will get sporty. And, your inbound could be delayed by weather at Dulles or even a delay in the inbound into Nashville aircraft in the first place. It will be a busy flying time and any delay anywhere in the system will have knock on effects all over.

thoughts on making a 40 minute domestic to international connection through IAD on a Thursday lunchtime?
Arriving from Houston at 11:50am from IAH, departing to HND at 12:30pm. No checked bags, will be seated towards the front of the plane on the domestic leg. I know I'm playing with fire on this one but this was the only flight with PZ available which is why I booked it. In preparing to miss the connection, it doesn't look like there's anything on UA/NH that can get me to SGN with minimal delay (OZ/BR/SQ have some options with only a 12 hour delay, but I'm guessing United wouldn't bother to preserve my upgrade, even as a 1K). So I guess a missed connection means 24 hours in DC

I think it is certainly doable if able-bodied, no checked bags and you are at the front of the inbound aircraft, though it sure leaves no room for error. Even the smallest delay ex-IAH would probably tank the trip. Is UA selling this as one ticket or is it two tickets?
