How come it is asking me 60 pts ( 40 + 20) to upgrade all the segment from EWR to NRT ?

Shouldn't 40 pts is good for one-way upgrade from EWR - SFO - NRT ?

Is SFO a layover or stopover?

No but priority on the waitlist will drop to the very bottom (unless the PlusPoints come from a GS account). Best to wait to change FF acct until you clear or the chance of clearing becomes remote.

I've booked a R/T Economy ticket EWR-AKL, and have each segment waitlisted with 20 PlusPoints to Premium Plus.
I was attempting to change to a PlusPoints upgrade to Polaris, but the site says "No upgrade available".
Is this because it's already waitlisted E to PremiumPlus, and is this how it's "supposed" to work? Any workaround?

I'd call, or just try dropping the request and creating a new one.

Cheers.
Dropping the request also requires a call though, right? Can't seem to be able to do that online either. :(

I'm not sure. I haven't tried to cancel a request. So, yeah, it might require a call. :/

Easily done online. Go to your account overview and look at current reservations. There's a tab (second from the left) for "PlusPoints upgrades". To the right of your reservation will be a "cancel" button. They hid this feature for some reason and it should be easily doable from a reservation but it's not.

Edit: I believe the "cancel" button will only appear if NO segments have been upgraded. If any segment has cleared then the button goes away. Also, the "rules" state you cannot cancel and refund a PlusPoints upgrade if it's already cleared.

I find this entire changeover to PlusPoints and status attainment beyond confusing. The other shoe will drop in 2021 when the number of 1K’s drops precipitously.

I ended up cancelling a Plus Points upgrade request because it was so screwed up. On the Plus Points upgrade tab exactly as described by RobOnLI

I then requested the upgrade again (for the same reservation). It was still screwed up and the upgrade did not happen but the points did not get deducted so worked as it was supposed to.

I had a second one that was also screwed up so cancelled that one and then called in. Still screwed up on the display (double display) but upgrade happened at the gate.

The only time the Cancel Upgrade is not there is if the upgrade has been processed and this is in line with the stated terms that you do not get back the points if you have been successful with the upgrade.

That works, thanks.
Seems a tad complicated (to me), so the guidance was very welcome!

Canceling was relatively easy, but the re-applying PlusPoints to PremiumPlus & Polaris failed on first attempt because I didn't click CONFIRM/PURCHASE on final screen.

Strange they don't make this work from the individual reservations page, but once you know how this works, it's simple enough I guess.

Just in case it seems odd to you, and it did it to me but jsloan explained that it did work that way, is that if RN upgrade is successful they will deduct the points for the PZ upgrade.

IMO the new programs are generally less or no more complicated. BUT the workarounds / hacks / ... especially for status obtainment are more complex and hark back to the mileage running days. If you aren't going to play that game, and just fly as you need, it does not need it to be complex... BUT this is FT and many will play the game. And the vast majority of the FF flyers will just fly as they need

Totally worthless. In one month one upgrade of ten requested cleared. Kirby bait & switch

And in about that same period of time, I've been able to clear a couple of Y to Polaris upgrades on what would have otherwise been wasted RPUs expiring at the end of the month that I couldn't get to clear earlier in 2019. YMMV.
