Hi, I have a very basic question. I would like to book several trips - both international and domestic - using my Plus Points to upgrade from Economy to either Premium Economy or Business / First Class.

I know how to use Expert mode, but I don't know the codes that would show me which flights have the ability to automatically upgrade (i.e. the day of booking) to Premium Economy and/or Business First Class using Plus Points. I am a 1K member if that matters at all.

If you click into advanced search and then click "plus points upgrade" halfway down, it will show you fares and plus points needed for an upgrade on those flights. If you further click "only show available" on the flight page, it will show only the flights that are currently eligible for an immediate upgrade using point.

The "search for upgrade" functionality is slow and unreliable and most of us don't use it at all. Much better to use expert mode to look for RN/PZ.

Points Question

If I fly PEK-ORD-IAH EZE in one continuous trip, and book in W class. Would 40 Plus Points suffice for all legs?

Certainly if all layovers are under 4h.

I think some have reported >4h being OK also (since that is not technically a stopover), but that was not my experience with GPUs. Agents may be able to extend the request if the computer isn't doing it, though.

ORD-IAH Arrives at 4:53 PM

IAH-EZE Departs at 10:20 PM

so it’s five hours and 23 minutes

Up to 24 hours on an international trip is not considered a stopover. UA allows at least 12 hour connections on an international ticker using an single upgrade instrument. Longer times have been reported for mileage upgrades.

Did I hear correctly I can apply a pointsplus upgrade within 24 hours now if there isn’t confirmed space available? I know with GPUs I could only apply close in if there was confirmed space.

I have IAD-FRA waitlisted but looking to SDC to IAH-FRA and wondering if I can keep my upgrade request.

edit: you can request up to t-10 apparently, so I’m good now.

Per the website:

PlusPoints upgrades can be requested all the way until the cut-off time to check in for your flight. Previously, we only accepted new waitlist requests for Global Premier Upgrades and Regional Premier Upgrades up to 24 hours before departure. Waitlists for MileagePlus Upgrade Awards will continue to be accepted until 24 hours before departure.

I'm not sure what "T-10" in your post even means. 10 hours? 10 minutes? Either way, it's up until check-in cut off time.

As a Plat, must say I've benefited from PlusPoints so far. Bought a pretty cheap TATL trip for March and noticed that the PlusPoints upgrade was available for a the long-haul with new Polaris seats, so I took it. It's sad that I am now out of PlusPoints for the year but since last year I would've had no GPUs and I struggled to use my 2 RPUs I will take this as a win.

Thanks, I checked the FAQs on the website and didn't see that one. The agent told me her supervisor had said you could apply Points until 10 hours before the flight, but clearly that must be incorrect.

I’ve been successful at applying for an pluspoints upgrade within ~11 hours of departure. Mine cleared at the gate.

I had success applying plus points for a family member less than 2hrs before departure via the lounge agent and a phone call.

While I had not thought about this, I just realized from some of the notation on employee site that the purpose of the swap to plus point from certs was do be able to devalue them. Up to last year, once RPU cert gave you a domestic upgrade. One GPU cert gave you a global upgrade. It wasn’t easy to devalue it because you can’t exactly charge a 1.1 certs or 1.4 certs etc for an upgrade. The move to plus points was specifically for this purpose.

Never a dull moment

It's just easier to do relatively small devaluations. But even with GPUs/RPUs UA could have reduced the number (as they did this past year by limiting RPUs to 4) for a given status level. Easy enough to say 1K gets you only 5 GPUs, and you need another 50k miles to get a 6th, for example.

I think the more likely outcome is not straight up devaluation (e.g., E-->J costs 50 rather than 40 points) but rather variable pricing based on loads and flight length.

I’m flying LAX – EWR - ZRH in a few weeks time. I utilized 80+ points to upgrade this itinerary. The EWR - ZRH leg cleared last week. The LAX Dash EWR leg is waitlisted and I’m number 16 with 14 seats currently for business, I did not wait list for PP. With that said, could I call and ask to change my flight to the one in our before which seems to have better upgrade possibilities. Does a reservation with plus points applied permit this?

Thanks

Out of curiosity, why did you choose to not waitlist for PP on the LAX-EWR portion?
