Some tips on TPE and HND in this and the QA thread helped. I should quit while I'm ahead though.

1. Route: HND-LAX (originally HND-ORD)
2. Date: January 21, 2025 (Tuesday)
3. Fare class: W
4. Y-O-J
5. # of Plus Points: 40
6. How many days/weeks in advance ticket was purchased: 10 months (March 2024)
7. How many hours/days/weeks before departure did upgrade clear: 8 months (May 24, 2024)

I had originally booked BKK-HND-ORD-YYC, where ORD-YYC was upgraded at booking (PZ>0).
Then HND-ORD upgrade W->RN happened a month later (April 2024).

United removed the evening ORD-YYC from the winter schedule and my itinerary was changed to BKK-HND-LAX-DEN-YYC with HND-LAX surprisingly clearing PZ eight months in advance (very rare these days).
I'd prefer HND-ORD but I'd rather have the confirmed Polaris upgrade.

Saw PN9 PZ0, figured I'd give it a shot. It worked 👍
Wow that is amazing. What a surprise without PZ = 0. Are you Global Service?

PN9 is a good indicator that PZ space will become nonzero. If no one is on WL, the request may be cleared in a few hours or a few days when computer feels the urge to do so🤪

Just as a point of comparison, my recent HND-IAD was PN9 for quite a while and never to my knowledge went PZ>0. Yes, an aberration IMHO.

It's been discussed elsewhere, but the prevailing theory is that this behavior allows UA to confirm PZ for those whom it deems valuable enough (high status, high fare class) while not opening it up for any Joe Schmoe with a handful of miles to spare.

Well if that is the case I wish United would show the buy up price when PlusPoints are applied. I am quite happy to concede I may not be valuable to United as a mere 1K who will never be GS.
