Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus Premier members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through Uniteds award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Were extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

It may not be a hard stop Sunday night, but things are definitely drawing down domestically. Looks like Monday ORD-DEN is showing 6 of 11 cancelled.

This is exactly how I feel about United today, which is very different from a few days ago. It is awful.

United is drawing down its remaining trans-Atlantic operation. The final westbound departures will take place on March 25.

We're booked on MXP-EWR in early May. If westbound departures end in March, how come our flight doesn't show as cancelled?

These cancellations are for April. They haven't released their plan for May; I doubt they have one yet. Give it a couple of weeks.

If I have a flight to TLV (assuming the border will open up) next month but want to avoid EU routing, will UA put me through to TK via IST (again assuming they wont' cancel late next month)?

Maybe I missed it in this super long thread, but UA not only stops the nonstop DEN-OGG April 1st, but doesnt even offer connection options, although it offers alternative cities, in this case Hilo.

Im in Maui so this pure curiosity on my part.

I can confirm that is indeed yes.
My SFO-MEL flight for March 24th was cancelled earlier today and AFAIK today's westbound MEL flight is the last one until resumption. Looking at potentially routing through SYD (actually would be a nice upgrade to real polaris on 777-300) or cancelling the trip altogether and just to stay put for the time being.
Melbourne is home to me but I do need to get back to the States in mid June so I'm concerned about things getting even worse and I would not be able to return.

No guarantee those cargo segments will be eligible for paying passengers. If the flight has passengers it needs a full FA crew (even for 1 passenger) and catering and processing customer bags and cleaning the cabin and .....

United Reinstates Some International Flights Across the Globe to Help Customers Get Where they Need to Be

CHICAGO, March 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- While travel demand continues to drop and United continues to adjust its schedules accordingly, the airline knows some people around the globe are displaced and still need to get home. While United's international schedule will still be reduced by about 90% in April, the airline will continue flying six daily operations to and from the following destinations covering Asia, Australia, Latin America, the Middle East and Europe in an effort to get customers where they need to be. This remains a fluid situation, but United continues to play a role in connecting people and uniting the world, especially in these challenging times.

Flights continuing from now through May schedule
  • Newark/New York Frankfurt (Flights 960/961)
  • Newark/New York London (Flights 16/17)
  • Newark/New York Tel Aviv (Flights 90/91)
  • Houston Sao Paulo (Flights 62/63)
  • San Francisco Tokyo-Narita (Flights 837/838)
  • San Francisco Sydney (Flights 863/870)
In addition to the above, United has reinstated the following flights to help displaced customers who still need to get home.

Flights through 3/27 outbound
  • Newark/New York Amsterdam (Flights 70/71)
  • Newark/New York Munich (Flights 30/31)
  • Newark/New York Brussels (Flights 999/998)
  • Washington-Dulles London (Flights 918/919)
  • San Francisco Frankfurt (Flights 58/59)
  • Newark/New York Sao Paulo (Flights 149/148)
Flights through 3/29 outbound
  • San Francisco Seoul (Flights 893/892)
In destinations where government actions have barred us from flying, we are actively looking for ways to bring customers who have been impacted by travel restrictions back to the United States. This includes working with the U.S. State Department and the local governments to gain permission to operate service.

Is there a good summary somewhere of what flights have been cancelled? I have a EWR-AMS roundtrip booked next week (late March) and am wondering if it will be cancelled.

If international, I would assume the flight is cancelled if not explicitly excluded by the notice on united hub.
