Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

We’re assuming we could get stuck in Frankfurt (our flight from Africa to Europe is on LH from ADD), but that some flights will need to fly out to get Americans home from Europe or other locations?
I'm not sure what your final destination is, but I see saver biz space on Saturday's ADD-IAD ET flight, I'd try to rebook on that if possible.

Yes; that falls within the parameters of the existing worldwide travel waiver.

American citizen currently overseas. I need to return from Spain in May. I realize this is currently outside the window, but given the immediacy of the announcement, and the fact that things seem likely to keep getting worse before better, I expect that to be extended.

Would you all recommend booking flights ASAP, and hoping they don't get cancelled, or waiting until something more definitive is said regarding my travel timeframe (I'd be flying BCN-STL, so obviously no nonstops, but also some seasonal routes that may get cancelled, etc).

Also, any benefit to booking via cash vs. miles?

I posted yesterday about my EWR to LHR flight I booked last month that is now about $700 cheaper in total price. I went on my account and there was an option to cancel with all the money going towards any future flight. Nothing was stated about any fees. My miles for the Polaris upgrade would also be deposited with no apparent fee. I'm guessing there would be nothing stopping me from doing that and then rebooking the same flight at the cheaper price ? And the extra money can just be used towards a future flight? Of course that is assuming things don't get worse by June...

I booked through a third party (am supposed to fly IAD-LIS via ZRH tomorrow) and am having zero luck in getting through to customer service so far. Anyone know what happens if I'm a no show/if I can still rebook under this new policy? And if I've got any chance at getting taxes back if I cancel, or can get United credit, as I have no idea when I can actually book this trip again? Flight is still on as far as I can tell, so I'm worried I'm just going to lose everything because I can't rebook.

just called UA and tried to book for later in the year. They quoted a huge infeasible fare difference and will not refund as no waivers in effect for Japan or Manila. The only option I have is flight credit. I want a rebook at no cost or a full refund.

in other news metro Manila now on lockdown so not sure if that changes anything.

COVID AC metal UA ticket

Ticket is CDG-YYZ-CLT roundtrip ticketed by UA, AC metal.

Outbound leg was flown in February. Inbound to CDG is scheduled next week. Seems like a bad time to go back to Europe.

Neither website allows changes, and says to call the other since the trip is already in progress. Who should I call and wait a few hours to talk to, fellow flyers? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hypothetical question: what would happen if UA (or any other airline) ignores the "halted flights" directive, and flies anyway?

Generally, no; if you no-show, you won't be able to rebook.

You will be able to get United credit, assuming you can get through to someone prior to departure.

Wait; the situation changes on a daily basis, See if they issue a waiver.

Not in and of itself, but it may lead UA to issue a waiver.

Nothing; flights haven't been halted. But they'd be fined extensively for every ineligible passenger they allowed on board -- so they could basically only transport US citizens and green-card holders once the Europe ban takes effect.

It depends on whose miles they are. But I would not count on being able to game the system the way you describe. The reservation will carry the prior history.

UA is waiving change fees, but not redeposit fees.

It'd be easier to update the FAQ to list flights to Asia/Europe that UA is still actually flying.

I have a really cool Europe trip put together end of May on miles. It is probably out of the window now. I wonder if someone decided they are doing things this way to get as much $125 as they can or they just have not thought about it yet.

With dynamic award pricing, the new tickets might cause a different number of miles, for example. How will that work if you choose to re-use instead of redeposit?

Unless UA issues a waiver that covers differences in fare, UA would collect the fare difference -- in the form of extra miles -- when you rebook.
