Did you get your return trip home to clear? I'm hoping to book into LHR from the West Coast but haven't found any PZ space on the way back for the first half of October.

Short answer: no, but didn't look

Long answer: no - wife wanted to take advantage of cheap USD-EUR duty free ex-CDG and Skyteam terminal 2E duty free is way better than *A duty free. So I am flying Skyteam back to US, cheapo oneway AM J to MEX (am playing the field in 2023 - UA Plat and DL Plat). Then short hop to IAH.

Given how reliably PP seem to clear into J on LH, and sometimes into F, this might be the best/only reliable use of PlusPoints.

I previously booked the above, with confirmed upgrades on the transatlantic segments. A few days ago (~4 weeks out from travel), I found PZ3 on a ORD-LHR nonstop on October 4. I called in to make sure I could make this change without messing up our confirmed return upgrades. The agent suggested that she talk to the rate desk to find out how much it would cost to upfare the outbound flight to W, which turned out to not be much. So, now we have a nonstop rather than a connection in Boston, and we got 80 Plus Points back to (hopefully) use for something else.

There's maybe a dozen people in the High J 763 cabin but it still came as a surprise I could clear immediately. My return (FRA-EWR) is waitlisted.

Did you clear with PN class? I didn't see PZ class available.

What date do you mean? We aren't to the 18th yet which means you couldn't have cleared seconds before boarding.

If you were going to clear at booking why did you bother spending the money for PremPlus? Book the cheapest W fare and use just 10 PlusPoints more. Unless you are super short on PPs or the PremPlus fare was barely more expensive than coach?

Possible/likely that OP cleared into "invisible" PZ space, i.e., the flight was showing PZ0 but upon waitlisting UA cleared his upgrade immediately, on account of his status and/or fare class. This has happened to me once.

Pleasantly surprised to also clear the upgrade at booking from CLE-EWR and EWR-CLE at the same time I upgraded the international legs - while both are short flights, it’s been a long time since I have been able to clear upgrades on the domestic feeder flights this far in advance.

How common is this? Any other instances?

Is there a reliable way to identify upgradable J space on LH that will clear at booking?

not really. If I or O is available then it pretty much clears. But it can clear if you don't see it. It is more closely tied to availability to M&M members than to *A

Any way to predict "invisible" PZ space? How about if PN is available >1?
