In a nutshell, PN can be an indicator, though YMMV how reliable it is. Your booking class may also play a factor. IIRC I was on a pretty low booking class (one that required 80 Plus Points to upgrade) the one time I instantly cleared, FWIW.

7. upgraded to O after boarding, then given J BP
Before boarding I was #7 on J waitlist, #2 on O waitlist. I suspect that upgrades were the result of mis-connects due to weather ground stop at EWR.

I know this is a success thread but don't think there's a Polaris upgrade failure thread. Tried to upgrade someone into O or J, but without status, he was at the bottom of the lists and did not clear. 3 of 8 on the J waitlist cleared and 0 of 8 on the O waitlist cleared (5 were on both lists).
