Crashworthiness and fire containment standards make the "quick-change" and Combi concepts virtually impossible in this era. But, low-density cargo in the cabin with the real moneymaking freight in otherwise-empty bellies (or not even flying) is a reasonable stopgap to generate some much-needed cashflow and meet a need when so many passenger flights are suspended.

It's fair to hypothesize that this is only a transitional time. There isn't actually greater cargo demand, just dramatically reduced capacity. As more flights resume, rates will probably stabilize, although we might see a healthier mix of cargo on pax flights... perhaps leading to a greater proliferation of hand baggage-only fares?

Why haven't they cancelled China flights in May yet?

Since most of global PPE and pharmaceutical components are sourced from China currently, there is case to maintain flights and convert to essentially cargo for critical healthcare supplies

CX was running 3, sometimes 4 flights daily, and AA another one. The route is down to CX 2x weekly now. There is obviously a lot of cargo capacity missing at this time.
Looks like UA is able to serve cargo demand on that route.

This thread has gotten me all nostalgic for the Worldwide Cargo DC-10s. I remember seeing those at LAX

Might be alot more cargo opportunities if Chinese government and UPS/FedEx dont get their spat figured out.

FedEx and UPS pilots refusing to take Chinese required Covid testing.

Until they cancel the passenger tickets for the cargo flights, I think I'm not technically eligible for a refund.

loved the look of those! While there was no chance of happening, I really wanted the new UA to convert the CO 762's to freighters.

The cargo flights have completely different flight numbers, there are no passenger flights. No such thing as a passenger ticket on a cargo flight.

I have China US round trip flights in May that aren't cancelled. No waiver covering refunds in May for China yet. They aren't selling seats but the flights still exist on my ticket.
