I always wonder why folks book Y fares ... I'd assume P or Z should be the same or cheaper ... anyway, a great route to clear UGs on.

Not the case here. $3460 for Y vs $5490 for P at time of booking. And yes it is a great route to clear. But it sucks if you miss - slimline 3-4-3 for 12 hours in the back of a -300 is a special kind of hell.

My second J since our honeymoon back in 2002 and the first flight at all, where I used my newly 'earned' GPU's - so 100% upgrade rate at the moment and a new 772 on top - should buy a lottery ticket

Cleared at booking, Feb. 23

Buy-up offer was $9,536, so I guess that means the collective value of my seven remaining GPUs is north of $66,000.

And I was told I was off-base when I gave each GPU a value of $1,000......

Y -> J
Booked 11/22; GPU applied 12/26 or so
Cleared about an hour before departure

This was a weird one--flight status showed J booked full, with three seats blocked and myself atop the upgrade list maybe two hours before the flight. Having seen this movie before, I didn't bother to keep checking the status and so only learned my upgrade had cleared as I was walking to the gate. I then saw that a total of five people got upgraded, with myself third on that list and, I think, no seats shown as blocked. Did United decide to get three pilots to Europe on another plane, then have some people misconnect?

blocked usually means a Y oversell and they expect OPUPs or clearing UGs. Usually really good news for gate upgrades because nobody can buy or SDC into J anymore.
