Upgrading on flights operated by ANA
Global Premier Upgrades on ANA-operated flights are valid for one-segment, one-cabin upgrades on any multi-cabin international flight operated by ANA and marketed by ANA or United. Upgrades are subject to availability and valid for paid, published fares only. The following ANA fare classes are eligible for Global Premier Upgrades: C, D, J, Y, B, E and G. Please see the terms and conditions below for specific eligibility rules.
Each NH/ANA segment requires an unique GPU. A a single GPU can not be used for two ANA segment nor for a connecting UA segment

Summary of Practical Advice from this thread:

* If you have bought a ticket from United (e.g., cause you want PQDs), you likely have UA codeshares of NH-operated flights. However, only NH-ticketed flights can have upgrades requested. When you have these flights, you need to call United (e.g., the 1K desk) and tell them you want to use GPUs on this itinerary. What they will do is modify your ticket so that the codeshares are replaced with the native flight numbers. This takes 10-15 minutes. You will still need to separately request the upgrades using the United GPU request form (link below) for LH/ANA flights.

* The web form will ask for information from your ticket. You will need to enter the NH flight numbers. Also it will ask for your confirmation code and can use the United-issued confirmation code (not the NH confirmation code)

* You should be able to verify in advance whether the upgrade is going to clear based on NH inventory. I class is for Y->J upgrades and O class is for J->F. These are also the business and first 'saver' award buckets, and can be estimated by doing phantom bookings of award travel for the same flights. If saver awards are showing up the classes should be available. Expertflyer and other sites can also show the availability.

* The T&Cs suggest that you cannot request upgrades until 8 weeks before the flight, but various flyertalkers have confirmed upgrades beyond the 8 week window.

* If your upgrade is not confirmed, you can keep trying before the flight. Waitlisting is now an option (for NH/ANA)

* There seems to be mixed opinion on whether O and I class inventory is put back into the system as the flight gets closer, but several have reported finding inventory show up 2-3 weeks before the flight.

Below are various T&Cs from United relevant to the applicability of fares, etc, copied from the website.

  1. Upgrades are valid only on ANA.
  2. Requests for upgrades can be made after you have purchased your ticket. Upgrades can be requested until 24 hours prior to departure. Your MileagePlus account number and password are required to complete the request.
  3. Global Premier Upgrades may not be requested when you travel on industry discount, agency discount, deeply discounted promotional tickets, award tickets using miles, or tickets purchased through sites like Priceline and Hotwire where the airline is not disclosed until after payment.
  4. ANA may impose blackout periods where upgrades are not permitted.
  5. Global Premier Upgrades may only be requested for up to four passengers per reservation.
  6. Global Premier Upgrades are deducted from your MileagePlus account automatically at time of reservation.
  7. One Global Premier Upgrade is required per person.
  8. Each individual segment requires a separate Global Premier Upgrade. For example, if you are flying on an eligible fare from Tokyo to Frankfurt to Rome, two Global Premier Upgrades are required.
  9. Double upgrades from Economy to First are not permitted on three-cabin aircraft.
  10. Standby and waitlisting is not permitted. Waitlisting is now an option (for NH/ANA)
  11. An upgrade may be confirmed within eight weeks of departure, if a seat is available.
  12. Mileage accrual is based on the original ticketed booking class, not the upgraded class of service.
  13. Requests for seat assignments, special meals and amenities should be made directly with the operating carrier.
  14. If you wish to make changes or cancel your Global Premier Upgrade request, please contact ANA.
  15. If an ANA segment of your itinerary is canceled, the upgrade request for that segment will also be automatically canceled. The Global Premier Upgrade will be automatically redeposited 24 to 48 hours after the cancellation.
  16. Global Premier Upgrade awards are not available through general selling agents.
How to request

Once the ticket has been issued, requests can be made online through the Global Premier Upgrade on ANA or Lufthansa request page. You can make upgrade requests for ANA-operated flights beginning eight weeks before departure until up to 24 hours before departure. You can make upgrade requests for Lufthansa-operated flights beginning 331 days before departure until up to 10 hours before departure.

You may request Global Premier Upgrades for up to four people traveling on the same reservation. You will need one Global Premier Upgrade for each traveler. (If the reservation has more than four travelers, you will need to call ANA or Lufthansa.) You do not need to be traveling with the passengers to request the upgrades and you can request upgrades for travelers with a different last name than yours. While you can only request upgrades for one segment at a time, you may upgrade more than one eligible segment on the itinerary.

If upgrade space is available at the time of the request and the requester chooses to confirm the upgrade, United will automatically deduct Global Premier Upgrades from the requester's MileagePlus account.

How to request for codeshare flights

If you are traveling on an ANA- or Lufthansa-operated codeshare flight with a United flight number, upgrades may be available and can be requested by calling 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) within the U.S. and Canada, elsewhere call your local United Customer Contact Center.

UA states on Global Premier Upgrades.

While it maybe possible, it does not look promising. Without a specific previous example, anything would be speculation.

I'll strongly speculate it isn't possible. If it's like the LH GPUs, it has to be in the operating carriers flight number to work. If it was a UA ticket, they'd replace the Code share with the native flight. Except in your case, it's a LH ticket, so doubt they'll replace for NH flight number. You could see if your TA can update, but would incur change fees.

Scanned the thread and didn't see the answers for this:

1. Has anyone gotten this to work? I assume it is a call-in thing and can't be done via the website.
2. The consensus here is that it is good for J->F, but what about Y->J? For example, I see a one-way B-fare in Y on a ANA-operated UA 7938 (ORD-NRT) for ~$1,600. Same flight in J is ~$3,000. Using a GPU to get into J on this seems like a good use, right? Or am I missing something? Or is this "good" only because the base fares themselves are relatively high?
3. More specific to the website usage, but I always search by fare class for upgradeable fares. For multi-segments, it becomes difficult if I want to mix and match upgradeable UA and NH segments. Does the "Upgrade Type" drop down solve this? I can't test right now as I currently do not have any more GPUs in my account.

Thanks in advance.

Correct.

That is exclusively a UA perk.

Figured. There's currently a Saver Economy award available on NRT-SEA on the date in November I need, but no Business Saver.

You should request to waitlisf for business. Call UA reservations. Tell them to book economy but waitlisf business. They'll debit the amount for biz but book you in Econ. If I or IN becomes available, you'll clear into it. And you'll clear higher priority than anyone else who has applied any sort of instrument because you've technically paid for biz already.

If the biz never clears, they refund the difference in saver Econ vs saver biz.

I do this all the time as NH releases seats much later than UA - I almost always clear 7-10 days out and do this all the time - and ive never missed! Just scored NRT-BRU 8 days out for my GF....

Just went through the process to do this...for an upgrade to First. If ticket is booked on United stock with UA flight numbers, you need to call an agent to have them convert the flights to pure NH flight numbers before processing the upgrade request online. The online process is seamless, but the process of switching the flights over to NH-coded flights was a bit of a cluster. NH kept the UA flight number on the reservation and it took a few iterations for them to get rid of it so that there were just the NH flights there. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to stay on the phone with UA if you want to get this done...

And based on my experience with similar situations on LH, be sure to get to the airport way early, because it isn't always final...

So does anyone have info on when/how often NH opens up upgrade space in F? I'm more than 30 days out for an NRT-SIN-NRT run in which I'm trying to upgrade from D to F. I tried for a few days using the UA.com upgrade page but kept getting "No upgrade space available" and I don't want to keep going through this manual process daily if space doesn't generally open up until much closer to flight time. (It's a shame these can't be wait-listed - would be a lot easier -- but still a nice perk if they eventually clear.)

Thanks! So GPUs on ANA would only go through if there was also award space?
