How often do your RPUs clear?

My new United Regional Premier Upgrade (RPU) strategy

Regional Premier® Upgrades (RPUs) are one-way, one-cabin, space available confirmable upgrades as early as the time of ticketing on eligible UA/UX and Copa Airlines-operated flights. They can be used on any fare and any flight that is also CPU eligible and on PS flights. This includes some Oceania and some COPA South America flights. They are generally not usable on flights outside of North America -- see upgrade region chart for details.

PS and non-west coast Hawaii flights are considered one of the better uses of RPUs since those flights are not CPU eligible and since elites are subject to copays on mileage upgrades.

RPUs are earned by elites -- (Re-)qualifying for Premier Platinum earns 2 RPU for the rest of the year, all of the next year and then thru 31 January of the following year. Re-)qualifying for Premier 1K earns 2 more RPUs and you can then earn 2 more RPUs for each additional 25K PQMs.
Unlike GPUs, UA does not offer an extension of unused and about to expire RPUs.

2MM, assuming they did not otherwise qualify for Platinum in the prior year, will have 2 RPUs deposited into their account around mid-January. 3MM+, assuming they did not otherwise qualify for 1K in the prior year, will have 2 RPUs and 6 GPUs deposited into their account around mid-January.

RPUs can be used for other individuals / friends / family but the upgrade priority is based on the status of the flyer, not the earning elite.

RPUs require PZ space (formerly R) to clear (except for GS RPUs which clear into PN space). For a given flight, RPU /GPU or Mileage+Copay have the same waitlist priority -- what does matter is passenger Status then Fare Class and then the time of the request. For more on waitlisting, see Understanding the United Upgrade List Comprehensively

A Regional Premier Upgrade will be considered used if any segment of an itinerary is upgraded and flown - no exception. Miles and GPUs have an exception if the waitlisted International BF/GF (now called Polaris business / first) does not clear, the miles/GPU will be returned -- this does not apply to RPUs. Recent changes in the rules make it clear there is no exception for PS routes.

Note on most RPU routes, a "connection" needs to be under 4 hours (longer only if it is the next scheduled flight) or a single RPU will not apply. This standard stopover definition for North American flights.

A single RPU (or GPU or Miles+copay) can not be applied to flights on different PNRs (or for different carriers even on the same PNR).

How frequent is it that you have to call back to have a RPU that does not clear put back into your account? Happened to me recently.

Very often because they are never cleared. Sometimes, I changed my flights, which confused the system, too.

Glad I caught it. Seems like UA’s systems aren’t as automatic as DL’s, though I won’t say DL’s is perfect.

right now. 100%. They haven't automatically re-deposited for the past year on a single occasion. You also have to chase these ... after 4 days I got an Email they were re-deposited ... but when checking my account they were not!

Clearly UA doesn't care to fix these problem. I wonder how many RPUs/GPUs they end up not refunding ever because folks don't complain ... given how long this problem has been persisting ... it feels like they are counting on it.

Mine did get out back correctly, but good reminder.

Having an incredibly lucky week, RPU upgraded Tuesday on the 815am, SFO-EWR on 797-10, and with some serious weather delays EWR-SFO, Thursday 6pm [delayed to 936pm but whatever]. Seems like 2015, no complaints

Have two flight segment coming up all domestic. Have not been UG to either and under the 96hr window. I don’t want to burn an RPU for just the first flight (ie it clears but not the second) as the second leg is the long one (and on wide body). Is there a way to only apply to the second segment?

Also, any chance I can apply to the second flight if the first flight is already T-24?

Yes, you need to call. Website won’t allow you to apply the RPU to the longer segment only. After that segment is cleared, you can call again to extend the RPU to the first/short segment. It the first/short segment is already within T 24 h, you can get the upgrade if there is a PZ space. Waiting list for it is a little bit iffy, depending upon the agent you talk to. Good luck.

Thanks, called it in. Currently #4 on the list with only 5 seats left. Not hopeful

Confirmation number and last name. I assume you know the latter.

Looks like one of tomorrow's trans con flights from EWR to SFO has about 20 open seats in biz, but less than 24 hours before departure. PZ is at 1. I can't apply the RPU online, so I guess I have to do it at the gate? What if someone takes that last PZ slot, then can I still apply an RPU to get on the upgrade list, less than 24 hours before departure?

Call, it can not be done online within 24 hours. You will not be able to apply a RPU at the gate.

If I book the flights through Chase UR portal (presuming it does NOT show up as BULK) can I use RPUs as normal?
