I booked several award tickets for later this year. They all say they are CPU eligible. I had a UA card earlier this year but cancelled and did not pay using the card obviously. I assume it was a system glitch.
As for booking first full, it seems to be up to the GA. Sometimes, they leave the aisle clear, sometimes they alternate seats, sometimes they just book full. On my last flight, it was booked full but the FA actually called up everyone that was CPUed and told them that he was holding their original Y seat assignment incase they wanted to decline the upgrade. No one declined. This calling up thing is either something new or more inconsistencies among GAs.

Do you have a UA MP credit card?

The card was cancelled months before I made the bookings. and I thought one of the requirements was that you had to use the card to pay for the booking

Purchased a new trip today (Tuesday) LAX-DEN-RAP for Thursday. Purchased econ lowest selected seats and directly after my confirmation E-mail I was notified I qualified for a CPU on both legs.

The gate upgrades thing is kind of a mess.

Flying UA 6093 and UA 1597 on June 3. Got both flights to clear for two passengers using PlusPoints and am now wondering if that was wasteful of me to use pluspoints as theyre only selling half of the seats available in first (but clearing upgrades for all of them I think?). What do you all think? Wise to ensure we both get upgraded or was a CPU nearly certain (Im GS)?

Took my first UA trip since COVID last week. As a Gold on a G Fare I got RDU-ORD and ORD-RDU at the gate. On the outbound I was #1 with two seats remaining after they'd cleared the two people ahead of me. I approached the podium and asked about an upgrade and the agent confirmed I was okay sitting next to someone. When I said yes I got the second to last F seat. On the way back I was cleared by the gate agent ~10 minutes or so before boarding. When I went to collect my BP the agent told me I would be sitting next to someone.

Flew this weekend for the first time since early march. With the blocking and holding onto CPUs until the gate I am seeing some weird stuff, mainly seats going out empty.
5/23 TPA-IAH cleared somewhere between check-in and when I got to the airport. A lot of non-revs in F on that flight. F was completely filled
5/23 IAH-SAT cleared as well. All of row 1 was empty (on an E175) even though I believe some were still wait-listed for F.
5/25 SAT-IAH cleared at the gate. GA asked if I was OK sitting next to someone. It looks like they sat someone next to me in Y anyway. Row 1 was also empty like on the inbound flight despite the UG list showing 4 more people waiting for UG
5/25 IAH-TPA Asked the agent in the UC how my odds were looking and she said good since there were 6 blocked seats and I was #5 . Asked the GA and was told that all the upgrades had been processed, UG didn't clear and as far as I could tell 2 seats went out empty.
I probably would have raised a stink on that last flight if conditions were normal and sitting in F would have gotten me more than just the extra seat width.
