Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.

These are my estimated measurements in economy on the CR7 (which are the same bins as CR9 in economy, CR2, and various Dash 8s; on most if not all airlines since it's a standard bin for this fuselage size from Bombardier), based on my camera backpack which fits in the bin snugly when fully loaded.

~12 inches tall, ~14 inches deep, ~60 inches long

The published dimensions of my bag are 10.5"x13"x18". The 10.5" does not include the straps and buckles, which add at least another inch to the thickness, and the bag will not fit if I have my laptop in it (adding .5" to .75" thickness to the back). The bag is 13 inches wide, and it just barely fits sideways, with maybe half an inch to 3/4ths of an inch of space between the side of the bag and the lip of the bin. The 60 inch dimension is derived from the fact that the bins span two rows, and each row has 31 inches of pitch, for a total of 62 inches, but I subtracted two for the ends, where the sides of the bins would take up space.

I can't be certain, but the underseat space might actually be larger than these bins!

Citivas, I went through the same dilemma last year as described in my One Bag to Rule Them All thread. I'm also a United flyer though I connect to other lines abroad. Got lots of advice saying "they never use the sizer" but I wanted to be ready in case that changed. Sounds like it has for you, although I've yet to see a GA actually use one. As part of that effort, I carried a gorgeous Lat 56 roller and a nice but inexpensive Delsey to the airport and tested them in domestic sizers. They both failed United's.

I found that the B&R Domestic U122CX-4 fits the United sizer box in a way that makes maximum use of the available space - it fills the sizer completely. It's profile is rectangular, not slightly pear-shaped like, say, many Delseys. Even relatively stuffed, it should squeeze into the sizer. After a year and a half, I'm happy with the bag.

Downsides: expensive, heavy (about 10 lbs), and too tall for some European airlines official dimensions. But, I've never had it denied in Europe or Asia.

Tumi butler backpack acceptable as personal item on UA?

Looking to invest in new backpack to store under the seat when flying on United. It is 1.5 inches above max of 10 inches for personal items for width on one side... If I can squish it into the sizer will UA still accept it? The Tumi Butler Backpack measures
H: 16.75 inW: 11.5 inD: 5.5

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you!

I have used the Tumi Kingsville Deluxe Brief Pack, which is H: 17 W: 14 D: 9 on all of my flights for about the past 2 years and never had an issue. It has fit under every seat in front of me including small RJs.

I doubt you will have any issue as it looks like a pretty regular size. If you were wearing a much bigger backpack that really stood out, they might ask you to put it in the sizer.

My backpack is the same size and I have never been stopped. In economy you will likely have to squeeze the sides of the backpack to make it fit under the aisle seat (or any seat with an entertainment box).

If it is a day when UA is checking, it definitely will not fit the sizer and you will be required to gate check it. If it isn't, then it doesn't matter and you may board with it.

I've never seen UA checking sizes. The only time the gate agent has ever glanced at my carry on is on the smaller planes that require a green tag for your carry on to be gate checked. Do they do this for the basic economy tickets now?

For the 'carry-on bag' at least, they do check on occasions. They were definitely checking on my ORD-SFO last weekend, for groups 2 and higher (and possibly group 1, but I got there after group 1 had boarded so I can't be sure). Everything that looked even close was sent to the sizer. Any bags that were too large were being tagged and kept by the podium (no doubt stopping people from removing the tags on the jetbridge and boarding with the bag).

I've never seen them pay any real attention to the "personal item", only the main bag.

If it was above the sizer, you shouldn't be forced to check the backpack, but more so the other bag you've got (at which point the backpack would become the main carry-on item, and thus it's size would be fine). But realistically as long as it's at least close I wouldn't expect any problems - especially if the main carryon bag wasn't oversized.

I'm having a difficult time finding a personal item bag that meets the dimensions for both UA and AC. Combined, this is a 17"x10"x6" limit (the 6" comes from AC). Specifically, the problem is the 10". My briefcase that I've used for years is 17"x12"x4". Even shopping around online for messenger bags etc., everything seems to be at least 11" on the middle dimension. My laptop itself is 12"x9" so there's gotta be some sort of 10" bag that could fit my laptop and a couple of other small personal items, but I can't find one. I don't want a simple laptop holder because I'd like at least one additional pocket on it. Also I'd prefer it had a shoulder strap. Does anyone know anything?

Was surprised on my last EWR-PEK flight on a 77Y plane that gate agent asked the person in front of me in Group 1 to check his carry-on bag in the sizer. He reluctantly tried but it did not fit, so the GA insisted he gate check it.
The odd thing is that the bag didn't look any bigger than 80%+ of other bags that I see. Not sure why GA singled out this guy.
And needless to say, the passenger was NOT happy and voiced this opinion loudly!

Makes me wonder if he did something to annoy the GA prior to this.

Nothing that was immediately obvious or that I observed.
It was quite bizarre.

I have seen one GA in SF go after oversize bags like a hawk after fish. Maybe some develop an eye for it. Ironically, oversize on widebodies is not such an issue.

Yeah, no kidding.
I've seen and boarded through this GA many times, and although he's not particulary friendly, he never struck me as "hawkish".

What's everyone's general opinion on a Samsonite garment bag? Assume instead of a regular carry on I had a garment bag and a personal item (laptop bag). Would that get flagged as not fitting in the sizer and need to be checked? Searching has landed this in a dead end for me - beyond "if its special they'll usually hang it in the closet" but I think those questions are people that have a carry on AND a garment bag
