I've had the occasional carry-on measured but never had my personal item measured.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just be prepared to check your carry-on in the extremely unlikely case that they call you out on it.

UA does not measure, it uses a "sizer box" for testing the item. The dimensions of the sizer box are 1" in every dimension larger than UA specs.
That said, checking personal items is rare.
My carryon roller bag (legal) has been checked a couple of time but my roller computer bag (not legal) has never been check.

I have had my carry-on weighed and I've had gate agents advise me that my carry-on would not fit (sometimes they're right, usually they're wrong and it's always on a CRJ-200 or ERJ-145) but I've never had one bust out a measuring tape.

I wonder why they weigh it when theres no weight limit.

Sorry, I was including overseas "domestic" flights with UA partners. My point is that in ALL my traveling, I have NEVER had my carry-on directly measured.

Rolling Personal Item that Meets Requirements

Hi all - are you aware of any rolling luggage (backpack/suitcase/duffel bag) that meet the United personal item size requirements of 9 in x 10 in x 17 in (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm)? Thanks! .

Have merged your query into an existing discussion,

At the top of this thread, there is what we call a "wiki" and there you will fit an listing of items meeting the UA size requirements. There have not been many recent entries and not sure if any have wheels.

I can tell you for sure that none of the personal items in the wiki have wheels. Someone else has asked this before, and the wiki has not been updated since then.

If the question is, "can I carry on a bag with wheels as my 'personal item' on a basic economy fare?" that's not likely to work. You probably won't get past the check-in counter.

Look at "rolling briefcases" that also have a strap (so you can carry it past the agent).

I have a Solo Dakota overnight rolling case, and that will fit under the seat on A320, CRJ-200, ERJ-145, ATR and just about any other plane I've flown on.
Admittedly, you do lose ALL of your under-seat leg room doing that, so not ideal if you're a long legged individual or on a longer flight.
It WON't fit under the seat on a 737 except the middle seat, as the positioning of the seat legs is wrong. I hope that's helpful.

Doubt it would not fit the sizer, depending on which one you have those bags are roughly 16" x 14" x 9" vs UA size requirement 17 x 10 x 9 --- even with the 1 inch of grace provided by the sizer.

If you're talking about this one the dimensions (13.75 x 16.25 x 8.5) are larger than UA's "personal item" allowance (9 x 10 x 17).

If OP's question relates to basic economy restrictions, they don't actually stop you from using the overhead, they just won't let you carry-on a bag that exceeds the personal item dimenstions. I don't know how much play there is in the sizer, but 3.75 inches is a pretty significant overage.

No, they won't allow anything past that is bigger than the sizer and looks to the GA like it needs to be measured. Anything that looks like a briefcase with a normal shoulder strap is likely to be waived through.

Not a guarantee, of course, but I think it's not correct to say something that is 3 inches over in one dimension "won't be let on".
