Hi all,

I'm an AC guy so forgive me for my ignorance...

I have an upcoming multi-city flight...

YYZ-SFO on AC
SFO - LAX on UA
LAX - YYZ - on AC

I know what my checked and carry-on restrictions are for AC and I also know they turn a blind eye for Super Elite status holders..

However, on United, I'm a pleb, except for *G.

Are United agents super tight with carry-on size restrictions? I'd rather not check-in my Tumi carry-on...

AC's maximum size is
9 in x 15.5 in x 21.5 in

United is 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches

Thanks in advance for any insight/comments...

You'll be fine. I'd be genuinely shocked if you were singled out, especially since there are plenty of instances of larger bags than yours allowed aboard.

Is your bag bigger that the AC allowable? Enforcement varies by GA but generally is lax.

Thanks - I think I answered my own question. According to the Tumi site, my bag is exactly the UA size restriction, but 0.5" too large for the AC sizer. AC leaves me alone since I'm SE.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time with my silly question.

UA allows an extra 1 inch margin in all dimensions.

Recommendations for wheeled personal bag

Looking for recommendations on a "personal item" bag with wheels that will meet the United size restrictions. For 20 years we have carried Travelpro rollaboards and totes. But now as retirees when flying standby we have to give up he rollaboards at the gate, and our totes are just too darn heavy to schlep down long concourses. So looking for totes with wheels that can fit under the seat and meet the 9x10x17 bag sizer requirement. Over the rollaboard handle blackstrap would be nice, but not required. Thanks!

This thread's wiki has a list of products that have been "tested" by members for the size requirements -- vendors sometimes "forgot" to include wheels and/or handles in their dimensions.

Also FT has the Travel Products forum for discussion of the virtues of items like you are inquiring about.

That happens all to often. Airserv employees (while they are just doing their job) tend to be some of the most ridiculous when it comes to dealing with passengers. I once was caught in snow and had a flight departing at ORD in 30 min. I was randomly NOT given TSA PRE for some reason (on the most convenient day), so I had to go to the Premier Access security checkpoint. I was pounced by two Airserv employees, and then a TSO came up to us and told them the bag was fine, and then they found a sizer to put it in, and it fit... but they insisted I check it. After all of this fighting, the flight was less than 20min, so I missed the check in deadline... UA (for some reason) decided to let it through, and I ended up sprinting past the Airserv employees through security to make my flight... yeah... remember that snowstorm that made me late to the airport... it delayed my flight 7 hours... that was a fun day.

Duffle Bag and stuffing into sizer.

I have a bag duffel bag without wheels with stated measurements: 21.3''*13''*9.4'' . Will the botom (21.3X9.4 is a stiff, but readily bendable canvas. Will the airlines let me flex the bag as I put it into the sizer?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation of a inexpensive large should carryon that is stiff enough to protect a suit and has no wheels? I don't generally like wheeled carryon's as I like my hands free and the wheels on the larger luggage pieces.

Should not be a problem, as the wiki notes
Actual sizer dimensions: 10"x15"x23"
and the use of the sizer is generally not common except for clearly oversized bags

The thread wiki has multiple suggestions that fit UA's rules.

There is a general discussions of bags / carry-on in the FT Travel Products forum.

I don't typically shop at Walmart, but I asked my parents for a small carryon for my birthday and they got me the 16" Protege rollaboard from Walmart. It's only $35 and very small. My co-workers said they'd never seen a rollaboard that small. I used it on an IAD to LIT flight and it was good - fit underseat. I'm sure there are better options, but if price is a concern, maybe something to look at.

You'll be ok. I once brought a longboard as a personal item with no problems.

Carry-on luggage sizing

In case some of you did not know, United Airlines has a new carry-on luggage size policy. Not only your bag has to fit in one of those measuring cages, it has to fit "easily"

This was explained to me by a "friendly" gate agent at EWR. She was arguing that my perfectly sized carry on is too big. Even after I put my bag into the cage and it fit just fine, she would not admit that she was wrong, rather starting to argue that it did not "slide in" but was rather "pushed in" - apparently totally unacceptable.

Granted, I'm joking about the "new policy" - this is rather yet another example of how low the customer service standards at United have gone. Very sad....

Anyone have any experience with the BR baseline spinners? Looks like the wiki only reference upright bags, but was interested in getting a baseline spinner instead of the intl upright. Thanks!

Does anybody travel with a Filson bag? Specifically, their medium duffel? I just picked one up and am wondering, will the medium duffel pass scrutiny as a carry on? The reason why I ask is the dimensions are 20" W x 13" H x 12" D whereas United has a max allowance of 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches - both are the same at 45 linear inches. The part I'm worried about obviously is the depth, 9" vs 12". Now - I always pack light and my thinking is I could probably shove it in a sizer and still fit, but I'm just wondering if anyone owns a medium duffel and uses it as a carry on?
