If rules are rules, then we should all kiss good-bye the famous "one time exception". After all, there should be no exceptions.

And, I don't think there is any self-served bar domestically.

I would be fine with that as long as they don't eliminate something that is allowed that they just use the excuse it is a one time exception when they give it to you. Too many times they just tell you they are giving you a one time exception when in reality and according to the rules you should have gotten it to begin with.

Was in the SEA UC a couple of weeks ago. There were scarcely a dozen people in there. The gate keeper I dealt with was quite polite and welcoming, so perhaps not the same person OP dealt with, but I certainly didn't see either of the two people who were working the desk "patrolling" the club.

I think your speculation is pure fantasy. The only beverages I saw available for self-serve at SEA were lemonade, iced tea, and water. Hard to get inebriated on those. Although I've seen it overseas, do any of the domestic clubs have self-serve alcoholic beverages?

Oh and considering there were about a dozen people in the club it's certainly not for lack of space.
If a lounge dragon made such an inflammatory comment about my guest, I think I'd have asked to see a supervisor immediately.

Way beyond tacky, way beyond rude, this is brazenly insulting.

I can't tell you how many times that I have invited random passengers into the club.
Especially those who sit outside some of the lounges for the wi-fi. I don't sit with them and have no idea how long they stay. My feeling is that I am entitled to bring a guest..... in the Houston clubs, they kind of gotten to know me and know what I do...usually I get a nice smile!
I do have to admit that I never thought about inconveniencing other members, just thought I was doing a nice thing. Need to re-think my actions.

I'm sure everyone has a different opinion on this, but my view would be if it's not crowded, it shouldn't really be an issue.

That is very nice.

Yes, you need to rethink your thoughts or UA needs to figure out who should be a member or how many kettles (hippies) you can guest. (Bolded) Think.

I've never seen the UC reserved for the elite.

I've seen enough of them. Don't be doing favors. The clubs are full enough. Don't be a "hero". I call this action a "zero".

UC's are for the elite. That is it.

I'll be sitting in one in DEN tomorrow, sucking down some swill with my pinky sticking out. Don't be "guesting" any one in - unless it is a business person, your family or a geek trying to pick up fee wi-fi sitting outside the door.

UC @ HNL does. Just sitting there on a table -- at least last time I was there in July...

Accompanied by another bunch of pedantic rules-are-rules apologist posts justifying customer-unfriendly behavior with rarely-enforced fine-print and fantasy scenarios where the behavior could be pro-customer.

If customers have unreasonable expectations and are flaunting and abusing the published rules, they deserve to be alienated.
Can you please reference any instance of a guest of a UC member acted inappropriately so much so that there was some consequence for the actual member who guested them in? I would have remembered a thread like that, but I'm sure you have several instances since you referenced a member taking some responsibility, so it must have happened. Thanks^

Ok just to lighten things up
DW and I were in Narita. She was a platinum member in her own right but sometimes they just take my card and a guest. We are checking in in the club , and an obviously distressed German family of 4 is being told that that only the wife can be a guest. the two (adult) daughters must wait outside for 4 hours. I said to the couple in German that I would see what I could do.

I produced my wife's platinum card, said to sign her in and we would each take a daughter as a guest. Told the German couple we also had two daughters. Big smiles all around and the club staffers even stood up and gave us a ceremonial bow.

There was No suggestion that they would be tossed when we left in an hour.

1. The rule is clear. OP has zero complaint about it being enforced and the fact that he may have gotten freebie use of the UC for his guests in the past is irrelevant.

2. If the agent was rude, he was rude. That would be true whether there is a rule or not.

For what it is worth, the UC rule on guests is pretty much the rule for most carriers worldwide and most other carriers strictly enforce it.

Personally, I would prefer to see simple rules such as this enforced. The fewer fights about whether the rule was enforced or waived in the past, the easier things are. Goes for excess baggage, carry-on size, waiver of change fees and a dozen other things.
