While we are committed to data transparency, Expert Flyer has been accessing united.com in an unauthorized fashion to retrieve UA availability. In addition, these activities have consumed significant united.com bandwidth that could otherwise be used by regular consumers. As a result, we had to take this action to protect the security and integrity of United’s systems.

Thank you for your understanding as to why we had to take this action. We continue to look at ways in which we can provide you with timely and useful information (some of which you will see in new releases of our own digital channels) as well as with partners that have authorized access to our data.

United isn't the first airline to go after screen scrapers. The airlines have a right to protect against these types of tresspassing.

That's very unfortunate. Awardtravelr made it so much easier to find bookings across multiple alliances. I hope they come back soon.

Doesn't KVS tool also scrape UA's (and many other airlines') website? Does KVS have some sort of agreements with airlines?

this has been discussed ad nauseam - there is a big difference between a centralized cloud app and a distributed client application.

Web scraping
U.S. courts have acknowledged that users of "scrapers" or "robots" may be held liable for committing trespass to chattels,[5][6] which involves a computer system itself being considered personal property upon which the user of a scraper is trespassing. The best known of these cases, eBay v. Bidder's Edge, resulted in an injunction ordering Bidder's Edge to stop accessing, collecting, and indexing auctions from the eBay web site. This case involved automatic placing of bids, known as auction sniping. However, in order to succeed on a claim of trespass to chattels, the plaintiff must demonstrate that the defendant intentionally and without authorization interfered with the plaintiff's possessory interest in the computer system and that the defendant's unauthorized use caused damage to the plaintiff. Not all cases of web spidering brought before the courts have been considered trespass to chattels.[7]

Looks like KVS is next

"Access denied" trying to search for upgrade/award space. Good times.

(Technically speculation at this point until we hear from KVS, but would be wholly unsurprising if true)

been going on for about 24 hours, more reports in http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...lity-tool.html, it does have a ominous feeling. No word yet from KVS.

KVS has been dark (without UA upgrade / award info) for about a week, so UA seems to consider either approach the same.

Looks like it's confirmed for KVS:

[Awards-Upgrades/UA] Method 27 Mar 2014
Please note that this Method is no longer available.
