New terminal at SFO: hard hat tour (photos)

http://thebat-sf.com/2013/12/02/new-...Traveler%29%29

–Chris McGinnis

"The new Boarding Area E will open on Tuesday, January 28th say airport officials and the design-build team of Hensel Phelps and Gensler.

United’s flights that currently operate out of Terminal 1 will move to Terminal 3 between February and May. (Currently, passengers checking in at Terminal 3, but with flights departing United Terminal 1, must take shuttle buses under the airport to get to their flights.) Boarding area E will be used for United’s mainline flights—United Express flights will use Boarding Area F."

Club Situation:

"A new United Club will open (estimated summer 2015) in the newly expanded concourse area that connects Boarding Area E with the rest of Terminal 3. (See diagram above.) However, construction has not begun, so it’s going to be a while. In the meantime, United Club members will be able to use a temporary United Club located on the mezzanine level between the current main security checkpoint and Boarding Area E. (This vacant space was a previous Red Carpet Club if anyone can remember back that far…United says that renovation of the space should begin soon, and should open by June 2014.)"

Isn't this where people have been speculating that a Centurion Lounge would be?

No, it will be landside and upstairs (possibly in the space formerly occupied by an RCC that used to be in that area, or in offices vacated by AA or Air Canada when they moved):

The new lounge will be located in a space (currently under construction) in the mezzanine level above the premium security checkpoint in United’s Terminal 3 and gate 75, according to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel. He also estimated that the new lounge will open sometime during summer 2014.

The former RCC they're referring to was upstairs and landside, accessed via the escalators in the center lobby between the checkpoints. In those days the checkpoint for gates 80 to 90 and 73 to 79 was between the bookstore and the clam chowder restaurant at the entrance to the F terminal. Gates 68 to 72 were glassed off and each had their own security checkpoint.

Yup. Exactly right. This was mostly before September 11 so security was not such a big deal.

That is exactly the space we've been talking about.

This RCC was closed after UA finished the expansion of the current T3 RCC. For those of us on here who complain about cramped clubs and slow wi-fi, there was a period of about 90 to 120 days during the construction of the new club when this small landside RCC was the only club in T3. Even during non-peak hours it was impossible to find a seat or a phone jack to check emails (this was in the prehistoric days prior to wi-fi).

In those days the RCC at the rotunda was less than 1/3 the size of the expanded club we know today.

I saw an A320 at the same gate earlier in the week. A CR7 was nearby, though not sure if it was also being used.. Good idea to make sure everything is in working order before starting up operations

Yes that's right. (If my feeble old brain is functioning correctly this morning.)

I wonder if AC will move to the new T3 boarding area when it's finished construction, or will AC remain stuck in the international terminal?

Given UA's need for gates I'd say that's rather doubtful. From a connection standpoint it would be nice if they were in terminal G instead of terminal A though.

Update from United on T3

courtesy Cranky Flier:

United Airlines Makes Major Investments for Customers at San Francisco International Airport

- Scheduled to re-open Jan. 28, the 68,800-square-foot boarding area...
- A yoga room

- United is making other investments in Terminal 3, including a new reception area for the airline's Global Services customers and a new check-in area for MileagePlus Premier customers, both scheduled to open in September.

- Additionally, United today announced it has appointed Mike Hanna, the airline's managing director of San Francisco operations and customer service, to the position of vice president, underscoring the importance of the San Francisco hub.

- From its San Francisco hub, United also offers more nonstop trans-Pacific service to and from the United States than any other airline.
