Thanks! coolcoil for the update. Let us know if you get the PQM Bonus for the 1/1 and 1/4 flights. I have not seen any updates in writing about the Bonus so I am curious to know. Safe Travels..

COPA 25% bonus is still on for 2014

I just received a mass emailing from COPA announcing the continuation of the 25% PQM bonus for booking through COPA channels. I have posted the text in Spanish below. I'm not going to translate it here, but the rules are the same as last year.

- Must be booked through a COPA channel (website, phone, or sales office)
- Good on all flights 1/1/14 through 12/31/14
- There is a clause that says flights must be purchased and flown during 2014. However, I received PQM bonus for my flight that I purchased on 12/30.

Bonus PQM for the 1/1 and 1/4 flights appeared this morning (1/25).

The 1/1 flight had received 50% PQM bonus at regular posting for the higher fare class, but the 25% PQM was only on base miles. I seem to remember that in the past, if you got 150% PQM because of fare class, your bonus was 1.5 X 25%. Maybe not the case now. I will read through the T&C to see if there is anything about this.

Another one flying LAX-PTY-KIN on L fare ... 1K/MM + spouse ... But I booked through expedia. Would this hurt my/our chances of an upgrade?

No effect.

LAX-PTY is a hard route to get the upgrade on; no idea about PTY-KIN.

I've got LAX-PTY-SJO-PTY-LAX booked for an Early March departure and early April return. The front cabin is still looking good, with only one flight showing two "Clase Negocios" seats occupied. I don't want to sit in economy for that distance, but I don't want to waste any RPUs, either. Think I should just keep an eye on it and request it if it starts to fill up?

CPUs on SJO-PTY-SJO

I read upthread about a missed CPU for a Gold on PTY-SJO. That's a very Premier-heavy route. As a 1K, I'm about 60/40 in my favor, but there are occasional empty seats remaining. You just never know.

It doesn't bother me, as it's such a short flight. In fact, when booking award tix between SJO & MDE or BOG, I don't spend the extra miles unless I can't find saver award space in E. I'm flying MDE-PTY-SJO tomorrow in E, and I'm a happy camper.

For those late to the party, this may have been covered, but award tickets for Chase cardholders are not CPU eligible on CM. EVERY ticket bought with $$$, however, is. This includes souther South America.

Someone said that northern South America is CPU/RPU eligible on UA, too. Not as of Feb. 1. It's GPU or $$ only under the new M+ award plan. For me, this means I will never fly UA from northern South America to the US again. AV or CM win on principle.

UA says that their BOG and LIM flights now have lay-flat BF seats, thus the change. So a 5 hour BOG-IAH trip requires a GPU on a W+ fare, while a 6 hour PS transcon that costs a LOT less money requires only a RPU.

So we know that MDE-BOG-IAH now isn't eligible for CPU/RPU, but what is yet to be clarified is whether MDE-PTY-IAH is. I just know that I won't be the one who finds out.

25% PQM Bonus

Thanks coolcoil! That's great news! Yet another reason to use CM for Latin America to USA access.

Is it true you can't waitlist when you use a RPU with Copa? I am trying to upgrade SJO-PTY-LAX and SJO-PTY can be upgraded but not PTY-LAX, agent on phone said that I couldn't waitlist on PTY-LAX. Is this true?

New Mileage Plus Gold

Hello,

My girlfriend just got status matched to Mileage Pus Gold (gold status shown on ticket confirmation). She has her first flight tomorrow MIA to PTY since being status matched. She is on a reservation with a non-status companion. I have looked around but I don't see any information of what we have to do to request the CPU upgrade. Does the system do it completely automatically? I don't need to call and request it? There is plenty of space, Expertflyer showing I9 and 13 seats on the seat map. There is less than 24 hours to go. I check the reservation online and they are still in economy. Please advise, we dont have any experience with the Copa or United upgrade system.

Thanks in advance.

For about the past 6 months, in my experience, COPA has not been good about upgrading sooner than a few hours before the flight. As a 1K, I don't think I have received an UG on a flight between the USA and PTY more than 12 hours ahead during that period. It's frustrating, I know.

Normally, given the I9 availability, I would not worry about the UG. In your GF's case, though, if the MP number was put on the reservation before she received the gold status, the system may not know realize that she has the status for that reservation. When she gets to the airport, she should ask if she is on the UG list and if she can add her companion too. COPA does not lock up all of the seats until just before boarding, so she should be fine doing it that way. If she has her gold card, she should have it with her to show the agent.

COPA does not publish any waiting list online or any indication that a flyer is eligible for an upgrade, so the only way to find out is by asking.

PTY-IAH is eligible for CPU. CPU on United are still given for flights to/from Central American.

However, PTY-IAH is a heavy premium flight. When I take that route, more often that not, first class is already sold out when I am about to purchase the flight.

It's Northern South America (Bogota, Lima) who got screwed.

I have not found IAH-PTY to be elite heavy. Certainly nothing like SFO-JFK or SFO -IAD. But I can typically buy a a P or Z SFO-IAH-PTY for between $800 and $1200, which I suspect is why you find it a difficult route to upgrade.

So it was possible to waitlist an RPU on Copa prior to 3/3/12 but not any longer? So if SHARES could do it before, why can't SHARES do it now?

If that's true, this thread should be annotated to say that the policy changed. It's generally the first thread that comes up for a search of 'waitlist RPU on Copa'.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/conti...pu-copa-2.html

I would do so, but the thread is closed to posting.
