Until 18 Oct 2018, upgrade space for RPU/GPUs was "R" ("PN" for GS), starting 19 Oct 2018 "R" has been replaced by "PZ"
Changes to UA's Fare Classes (19-20 October 2018)
"R" upgrade / fare class is missing! (replaced by PZ)
Changes to UA's Fare Classes (19-20 October 2018)
"R" upgrade / fare class is missing! (replaced by PZ)
Difference of"Upgrade Requested","Segment has been Waitlisted","R/PZ class requested"

I have an upcoming trip SFO to IAD to CAE and returning CAE to ORD to SFO. I asked to upgrade with miles; ORD to SFO was confirmed, SFO to IAD shows "R requested" even though all seats are available. Miles have not been deducted for either upgrade. When calling UA about this, the response was that eveything is ok, and I just need to wait until the upgrde clears. Still looks strange to me...

I don't care what it looks like so long as I clear into "R" if it opens up. Not likely to open on the AMS flight but should open on the LHR flight.

To add to the weirdness, I did OLCI for the flight and do not show on the upgrade list at either mobile app or .com. I called the 1K line (that's how she answered!) and she can't see it either. She poked around for a while and said maybe they will see it at the airport and that to trust I am on the list.
I think I'll be sitting in 22G tomorrow when the plane takes off.

The end of the story
GA in FRA confirmed I was *not* on the list and could not get me on for reasons she couldn't explain. UA app says in text that I am added to the upgrade list but not actually on it. Too bad as I had a M class fare and have seen 3 other flyers clear. Bummer it worked out this way. Now I have to make sure my GPU is re-deposited.

Here's my recent TPAC experience. UA had a schedule change so I had to call to get re-accommodated. I had applied an SWU to the old segments and none had cleared, and fortunately UA let me choose other flights, one of which had R inventory. End result was I was booked into R on one flight and itinerary showed "R class requested" for the other 2 flights. Interesting, the SWU was re-deposited into my account at the same time.
Move forward several weeks and I've been watching R inventory closely. This morning, I see R3 on one flight but haven't been upgraded. Called UA and it took the agent 10 minutes to figure out that the upgrade request had been processed incorrectly. She said it was good I called in because those 2 flights would have never been upgraded. She had to re-apply the SWU that had been deposited. I'm now confirmed in F/J on 2 of my 3 flights.
Sorry to hear about your ordeal, RockinRon.

In a few weeks, it will be 1 year from 3/3, and much more than 1 year since the UG logic was deployed and tested and released.

Not to beat a dead horse, but isn't that what we do on FT?
This was the final upgrade list when the door was shut. 7 people were upgraded. Certainly they could have been GS, had a higher fare class or other detail that I don't know, but I really feel I missed out on an upgrade.
If nothing else, I now know that if I see R-Class requested to be persistent to get it fixed. Live and learn!

On a side note, I wasn't sure of the privacy policy on the upgrade lists, so blocked out the names. I didn't recognize any of them and none were mine.

I recently re-ticketed an itinerary syd-NYC-syd to syd-NYC msy-syd. Was on the phone for 45 minutes while the agent tried to get the swus reapplied. I now have this r class requested issue -- have rung up again and agent is adamant all is ok.
Update -- agent no 3 also says everything is perfect. Very strange as swu was certainly deposited back into balance.

I see a slightly different version of this question on an upcoming long-haul international flight. I had purchased V class economy and put in for an upgrade with miles. Online, both legs were showing upgrade requested (to Business). Watching my reservation, and watching Business seat availability shrink, one day they dropped the upgrade price, and I bought it for the outbound overnight flight, which I think is the critical one not to be in economy on. That one now shows I am in Business with a Z, and "R class requested", while the return leg still shows me on a V with "Upgrade Requested" as before. I had assumed that the this meant that when I bought into Business, they just moved my upgrade with miles on the outbound flight to put me on the upgrade list for First. I figured I would wait till the flight and see. I'm fine with using the miles and fee to go up to First just as a treat, but I certainly don't mind if I stay in Business and get the miles and fee returned, either.

I really wish someone could get to the bottom of this issue.
I just called to request GPUs for an upcoming trip to HKG (certainly not an upgrade request I want to have difficulties with). The outbound now shows "R class requested" with the return showing "upgrade requested." To make it more interesting, my companion shows "upgrade requested" for both segments. UA agents insist that both mean the same. I'd like to believe them, but earlier this month I had a companion's "upgrade requested" GPU clear out-of-sequence while mine continued to say "R class requested." Multiple UA agents had no explanation - and I'm still not sure if there's any correlation.

I saw this thread resurrected. FWIW, my original "R-class requested" resulted in me getting upgraded at the gate on a 319 transcon. There was no activity prior to check-in, but one would not specifically expect to clear on a 319 transcon too far ahead of time.

, miles have still not been deducted though
