But that change has already been made..."UDUs" are now called CPUs - complimentary premier upgrades.

For the first time, this year I am in danger of having several GPU expiring unused. This is because upgrades are harder to find, and waitlisted upgrades clear less often.

So what I would like to see is an automatic extension of an uncleared GPU. I do not think this is likely to happen, but this would be a fair thing to do.

What if they offered a window of opportunity for recently-expired GPUs? Whatever the off-season is for F/C utilization, allow you to use expired GPUs during just that period. Basically you'd trade in the unused ones for new ones with the limitations. Might be a nice revenue-enhancement trick and make us feel like they're offering us a second chance.

Why? I think most people vastly prefer a 24-hour window to make changes...

Sure, but all they need is a few people to say otherwise and we'll then have, 'we're listening to our customers and they want...'

Exactly like they foisted the immediate SWU deposition which is largely lambasted.

+1. Current UA SDC is far more generous. I have been struggling with AA SDC trying to change ticket within 24hrs and feel so restricted.

I would not be surprised to see the following happen:
  • United announces that in 2013 the 24-hour SDC rule will change to 3 hours with some convoluted extra system (only free for 1K and up, strict enforcement of connection time limits with automatic re-faring)
  • Frustrated passengers announce they will leave, write in, complain, etc.
  • United announces it has reversed course and 24-hour SDC rule will remain in effect, but with the same convoluted extra system (because they've already built it and it's too late to un-ship it)
  • Delighted passengers realize how good they have it relative to AA/DL and praise UA for its customer focus, innovation, and friendliness

Speculation?

OK, I'll bite:

My crystal ball says no major changes. Only thing I see is a major targeted buyback status letter in January for those who decreased UA flying (regardless of the reason... AA match, UA failures, etc.).

My gut says it will be free if you flew high fares and had little or no (under 25K) flying with UA this year. It will be a pay to play (500-1200) if you qualified for 2P or above for 2013.

Agree with this -- but it's gotten messy since they've become electronic...

Actually very different from today's CPU. With the e500's you had to pick and choose which flights you wanted to upgrade. You only had a limited number of them to used based on how much UA metal distance you flew. System was designed to not supply you enough to upgrade every flight. Yes you could buy more if you were short so was actually a revenue generator. Lower tier members actually had a better chance to get an upgrade as upper tier did not always want to upgrade some flights. And the amount needed was also based on distance of flight, hence the 500 name. Each coupon would upgrade up to 500 miles.

This thread is like arguing about how to arrange the deck chairs on the Titanic as the ship goes down.

Personally, I don't see UA modifying MP in a beneficial way for its elites. If anything, I can see UA trumpeting the fixing of current broken things as positives (even if CO broke it in the first place when it took over UA), while looking at what happens at AA after it comes out of chapter 11. I think UA wants to get as close to the SkyPesos model as possible without having all its elites leave in the process.

This certainly isn't obvious considering how heavily they are currently advertising MP's high availability of saver-type award seats. For now, it's one of their few bright spots.
